⚡ Digital Product Passport: Enabling Sustainable Supply Chain Management for Electric Vehicle Batteries Presented last week at the Recy & Depo Tech Conference in Austria by our colleague Maria D., Team Lead of Research & Innovation and Claus Mersch, Research Manager at iPoint. 🤝 The presented results were partially funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) through the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) in the project CE-PASS (Nr.: 887526). This topic is vital as a digital product passport enhances transparency across the entire battery lifecycle, promotes sustainability, simplifies regulatory compliance, and conserves resources—key pillars for advancing the electric vehicle industry. 🚗 Zoom in and learn all about it 😊

Context-based sustainability reporting isn't mandatory (yet). Still, many organizations are starting to use it. But the reason isn’t just regulatory pressure. Here’s what Martina Prox observes: Some context: Companies are usually adopting context-based sustainability reporting for critical issues like water usage. Why? Because sustainability reporting isn’t black and white. Take water use in Europe: - In Scandinavia, a liter of water today isn't a big deal. - In Southern Spain, Greece, or Italy? It's a whole different story. Context is key for meaningful sustainability reporting. Another thing that’s key? Investor relations. Many investors are starting to look into context based sustainability reporting. They're mainly looking for 2 things: 1. Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi): - You commit to targets - Calculate your baseline - Get your targets approved 2. Transition Pathway Initiative: - Independent academic initiative - Uses public data from sustainability reports - Assesses if an organization can reach net zero by 2050 - Focuses on medium-term targets (crucial for realistic pathways) Investors use this for risk assessment. So, if you're not addressing key issues, they might not consider investing in your company. Let’s say you're in agriculture and are overusing water. Investors see that as a risk to your business. Not addressing it is a critical signal for them. The bottom line? Context-based sustainability reporting isn't mandatory by law, but it's becoming essential for investor relations. So if you want to stay competitive, looking into context-based sustainability reporting might make sense sooner than later. What do you think? How is your organization addressing sustainability context today?

Integrating Compliance and Sustainability in the Automotive Industry 🚗 We’re proud to share our role in the IDcycLIB project, highlighting our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and compliance. 💡 This initiative wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our team, especially Frauke Hänel and Pauline Langbehn, Research & Innovation Project Managers at iPoint. 👉 Explore Our Journey: Swipe through the slideshow from our recent presentation at the Fraunhofer Direct Recycling Battery Conference 2024. Learn how we’re driving forward a more sustainable future! In her presentation, "Exchange and Integration of Carbon Footprint Data in a Digital Battery Passport: A Step Towards Sustainable Battery Recycling," Frauke emphasized the importance of system interoperability in advancing software solutions for sustainability. The concept presented demonstrates how the seamless calculation and integration of PCF data into digital battery passports ensures automatic accessibility and processing of critical information. This innovation enables tracking and reducing a battery’s lifecycle impact, championing greener practices and processes across the industry. We’re looking forward to the final IDcycLIB project meeting on December 4th and 5th in Würzburg, where we’ll unveil the results of our collaboration and discuss the future of sustainable battery recycling. 🔋♻️ Thank you to all our partners for this cooperation: Carl Padberg Zentrifugenbau GmbH, Fraunhofer ISC, Fraunhofer IIS, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, Polysecure GmbH, Pure Devices GmbH, REELEMENTS, Leclanché SA, EurA AG, and our sponsor, Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF). 🤝 Together, we’re paving the way for a sustainable future in the automotive industry! 🚗 🌱 #Sustainability #Compliance #IDcycLIB #Innovation #BatteryRecycling P.S. It’s very hard for a large org to determine its fair share of the global carbon capacity. But solutions exist. Here’s what you need to know about context-based sustainability assessments: Traditional sustainability reporting often lacks context. For example, you might see "greenhouse gasses reduced by 5% per product." Sounds good, right? But here's what this claim didn’t tell you: 1) The total emissions of the organization actually increased. 2) The 5% reduction of GHGs on product-level helped mitigate this increase. 3) Overall, organizational emissions are still rising. This is where the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) comes in. They provide context for an organization's fair share. Here's how: 1) They use a top-down approach to understand industry sectors’ contribution to global emissions. 2) They look at what needs to happen by 2050 to stay below 1.5°C of global warming. 3) They determine how much each industry sector can emit. This results in a clear decarbonization path to 2050 for every industry. The overall target is a 90% reduction compared to 2021 levels. Now, why does this matter? Context-based reporting gives you and your stakeholders: 1. A more realistic picture of progress 2. Alignment with globally agreed climate goals 3. Better understanding of your organizational impact What would you add? Any experiences you would like share? Thank you, Martina Prox for explaining!
