✨ Have you ever wanted to try your hand at designing buttons? Now’s your chance! The Button Design Competition of the Japan Button Association is open for submissions until 20th January 2025! While the competition homepage is only available in Japanese, submissions from abroad should be welcome too. Categories for submitting physical buttons have a small entry fee, but participating with illustrations and notes only is free 😊 Key details: Competition categories: 1️⃣ Gentlemen’s Buttons 2️⃣ Ladies’ Buttons 3️⃣ On Paper Design (illustration-only button designs) Award criteria: ✅ Quality: High functionality and craftsmanship, good materials ✅ Design: Original, elegant ✅ Innovation: Fresh, forward-thinking ideas ✅ Trend Alignment: Matches current fashion trends ✅ Eco-Friendliness: Environmentally conscious materials or techniques 🗓️ Submission deadline: 20th January 2025 (entries must arrive by this date). 📅 Award ceremony: 17th April 2025 at Tokyo Big Sight during the Japan Hobby Show. Submission guidelines: 🧵 Physical buttons: Sew the button securely to white thick paper measuring approximately 6 cm wide by 15 cm tall. At the top indicate the competition category (it is possible to submit entries across multiple categories). In the lower half of the paper, include: material, intended use, date of production, company or school name (or individual name), address, phone number, email address. (A sample format is available on the website and can be downloaded for use.) 🖼️ On Paper Designs: Submit A4-sized illustrations with detailed concepts and potential production notes (colour designs required). Today, November 22, Japan celebrates Button Day! This day was established by the Japan Button Association, the only organisation for garment buttons officially recognised by the Japanese government. The date commemorates November 22, 1870 (Meiji 3), when the Japanese Navy adopted a European-style navy look for its uniforms, incorporating buttons. In 1987, the Japanese button industry designated this day as Button Day to honour this historic milestone.
