Every year on December 1, the anniversary of our establishment as a modern corporation in 1949, Marubeni employees take the opportunity to reflect on the creed that guides us to this day—“Fairness, Innovation, and Harmony.” This management philosophy was passed down to us from our first president, Shinobu Ichikawa, and continues to resonate throughout all our business activities. Today, we would like to share with you the origins of this creed: an excerpt from the speech President Ichikawa gave upon our establishment 75 years ago.    “The first principle or guiding spirit of the new Marubeni is ‘be fair.’ This may sound quite mundane, but when we act justly, we are strong, and a strong company is naturally also a fair and transparent company. Fortunately, during the chaotic period after the war, we did not get carried away by the currents of the times, and we did not lose our sense of righteousness, but overcame difficulties and pushed through, not only in sales, but also in our daily lives. The new company must maintain the pride of a large, leading company and, of course, uphold these principles.    “The next principle I hope the new Marubeni will embody is to always ‘be innovative.’ This means that we must keep up with the rapid progress of the times and not make the mistake of taking the wrong measures to cope with the ever-changing situations we encounter. We will do this by constantly promoting active research and cultivating a spirit of progressive development....     “Furthermore, the most desirable principle the new Marubeni should have is ‘harmony.’ This means having complete harmony among all executives and employees. These are words that have been said many times before, but they are immutable truths that have been true for as long as humans have walked the earth, and they will continue to be true for as long as society exists, to maintain our way of life and to protect peace, but these truths are even more urgently needed in business management.”    We hope you also enjoy a glimpse into Marubeni’s past through photos of our 1949 Osaka Head Office, Marubeni employees at the office circa 1949, and President Ichikawa, as well as President Ichikawa’s original calligraphy of the company creed in Japanese. The calligraphy is read from right to left: 正 (“Sei”; Fairness), 新 (“Shin”; Innovation), and 和 (“Wa”; Harmony), with the date and President Ichikawa’s signature in smaller characters on the left.

This week, Marubeni employees in Tokyo are enjoying the crisp autumn air that has finally reached the city. Many countries and cultures around the world welcome fall as a season of good harvests and feasting, and Japan is no exception! In the spirit of the phrase “shokuyoku no aki” (fall, the season of having a hearty appetite), we would like to share two works from the Marubeni Collection, each featuring a classic harvest food: the Western-style painting “Grapes” by Japanese artist Morita Tsunetomo (1881–1933), and a beautiful kimono depicting persimmons, a favorite autumn fruit in Japan.     Learn more about the Marubeni Collection (textiles, textile designs, paintings, and other artworks acquired through Marubeni’s business activities over the decades) here:  https://lnkd.in/dbFFsAvp     Pictured works:  “Grapes” (Created by Morita Tsunetomo)    “Kimono with design of persimmons on dark greenish blue figured silk crepe” (Created by Ueno Tameji in 1936)

Business Alliance for the Development of a Framework to Evaluate Carbon Credit Quality Summary: Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. and Marubeni Corporation have concluded a memorandum of understanding for a business alliance to develop a system for evaluating the quality of carbon credits. The business alliance between Osaka Gas and Marubeni has been undertaken with the aim of establishing a framework for the utilization of carbon credits that have been evaluated for quality and trustworthiness by leveraging the Carbon Credit Quality Initial Evaluation AI System, developed by Osaka Gas and constituting the first initiative of its kind globally.   Going Forward: The Osaka Gas AI System uses generative AI to analyze Credit PJ planning documents and evaluate their consistency with multiple standards, thereby allowing the quality of carbon credits to be quickly and easily confirmed. Osaka Gas will focus on further developing this system to expand the scope of carbon credits fields in which it can be applied and to improve the accuracy of the evaluations it conducts. Marubeni is contributing to the reduction of global GHGs by collaborating with domestic and international operators to conduct and support GHG reduction activities, generate carbon credits, and engage in global carbon credit trading. As part of the business alliance with Osaka Gas, Marubeni will explore the potential to develop and commercialize the AI System, identify needs, and make proposals to create a reliable platform that can be used with confidence. Osaka Gas and Marubeni aim to contribute to the achievement of carbon neutrality by 2050 by disseminating the AI System framework. Special consideration is given to projects which are outside the general scope of governmental reach, or to unique and pioneering projects which are expected to have a ripple effect on the enhancement of social welfare, while leveraging the unique benefits of these being private sector funds.   The Marubeni Group and the Marubeni Foundation will continue to work towards the realization of a society which embodies the idea that “where there are people, there are dreams.” The Marubeni Foundation for Social Welfare 50th Anniversary Exhibition https://lnkd.in/g-6bYJWW #Mugiwaraya #AOAart #WonderArt

As valuable members of the Marubeni team, Marubeni Group companies enthusiastically pursue business opportunities around the world. Today, we’d like to shine the spotlight on D-Orbit.     Based in Italy, D-Orbit is a space logistics service provider with whom Marubeni concluded an investment and related agreement in November 2023. To answer growing demand for satellite launches and data, D-Orbit develops and manufactures its own ION Satellite Carriers, capable of hosting multiple small satellites, and provides a “satellite last-mile delivery service” to accurately deploy satellites into the orbit desired by their operators. With a 100% successful launch record, D-Orbit also offers post-launch support through services that allow ION, which remains in space even after it has deployed small satellites into orbit, to be utilized to conduct verification experiments in outer space and as a platform for acquiring and transmitting data. The data these satellites obtain is expansive and versatile, enabling improvements in communications, GPS, weather forecasting, disaster prevention, mineral reserve surveys, crop growth forecasts, and more.     By creating synergies with one another, D-Orbit and Marubeni will continue to actively contribute to the development of the space industry in the new space sector as a comprehensive satellite solutions provider.
