#EGYPTAIR#AFRAA2024
From November 17-19, 2024, Cairo became the hub of African aviation as the 56th General Assembly of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) unfolded. Leaders from across the continent, including airline chairpersons, member companies, and key players in aviation, gathered to shape the future of the industry. Over three days filled with insightful discussions, meaningful connections, and inspiring moments, the event concluded with a Gala Dinner, celebrating the shared vision and progress of African aviation.
#AFRAA recently concluded the 56th Annual General Assembly and Summit in Cairo, Egypt, hosted by EGYPTAIR under the theme "Transform and Develop the Airline Industry in Africa."
This event brought together over 500 aviation leaders and stakeholders including African airline CEOs, civil aviation authorities, and industry leaders from across the globe. Discussions at the event were focused on addressing the challenges and opportunities shaping Africa's aviation landscape. Air transport in Africa is an economic bridge, linking people, goods and capital to markets and industries and integrating the vast continent.
Here are some key highlights from the event:
➡️ Safety and Sustainability: AFRAA Secretary General, Abderahmane Berthe, encouraged collaboration and active participation in reducing carbon emissions by taking the necessary steps toward decarbonization, investing in more fuel-efficient aircraft, optimizing flight operations to reduce fuel consumption, and exploring sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).
➡️ Operational Challenges
Addressed at the summit were the high operational costs and blocked airline funds, with an estimated $950 million still blocked across the continent, urging solutions to unlock economic potential.
➡️ Industry Growth and Connectivity
African airlines are experiencing significant growth, with a projected 15% increase in passenger traffic in 2024, alongside expanding intra-African connectivity
➡️ Enhancing Connectivity
AFRAA’s progress in enhancing connectivity across Africa through initiatives like the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) is starting to yield results. More countries committed to the #SAATM are gradually implementing the provisions of the Yamoussoukro Decision. “Barriers to intra-African aviation are gradually diminishing, and this momentum should be amplified to create opportunities for airlines and businesses, trade, tourism, and regional integration,” said AFRAA SG, Abderahmane Berthe.
As the continent’s air transport sector continues to expand, collaboration and strategic partnerships will be key to reaching its full potential in the global market.
