In Kenya, conventional farming has led to widespread soil degradation. In response, CIFOR-ICRAF, in partnership with AGRA, is transforming agriculture through regenerative practices like agroforestry, conservation tillage, and composting across Makueni, Kitui, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi counties. Over the past five years, more than 100,000 farmers have been trained through a farmer-to-farmer knowledge-sharing model, resulting in success stories in pest control, climate-smart agriculture, agroforestry, and drought-resistant crops. These practices are restoring degraded land, boosting yields, and building climate resilience while enhancing biodiversity. CIFOR-ICRAF is now assessing the impacts of regenerative agriculture on #SoilHealth, food security, and farmer resilience, aiming to scale these practices across Kenya and beyond—because a healthier planet starts with healthier soils. 🌱 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dsT2zy3n Cereal Growers Association | Farm Africa | Ermias Betemariam | #TreesPeoplePlanet

  • Happy World Radio Day 2025! Today, we celebrate the power of radio as a vital tool for knowledge-sharing, particularly in advancing climate-smart agriculture. This year’s theme, “Radio and Climate Change,” highlights the critical role of radio in equipping farmers with timely, actionable information while amplifying voices advocating for environmental sustainability. At Cereal Growers Association (CGA) together with our partners such as Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA), radio serves as a lifeline for smallholder farmers, bridging the gap between expert knowledge and on-the-ground farming practices. Through dedicated programs and expert-led discussions, our Farmer Service Centers (FSCs) leverage community radio to educate, inform, and drive the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. These platforms empower farmers with insights on climate resilience, market access, and best practices for improved productivity. A special appreciation to incredible radio stations— RAMOGI FM, Namlolwefm, Mayienga FM, West FM, Weru TV, MBCI RADIO, MtaaWangu, SIDAI FM ewang'an Ng'ejuk, Inooro Fm, Imani FM, Kameme FM Official, Arise FM, Kass FM International, KBC Radio Taifa, Sauti Ya Mkenya, among others—for their commitment to fostering agricultural knowledge and sustainability. Together, let’s continue harnessing the power of radio to transform sustainable farming. #TogetherWeGrow #makingmarketsworkbetterforfarmers #WorldRadioDay #ClimateSmartAgriculture #sustainablefarming #radioforfarmers

  • Cereal Growers Association (CGA) and the County Government of Kericho have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a public-private partnership aimed at empowering smallholder farmers in the county through collaboration on various programs. The MOU signing was presided over by Governor H.E. Dr. Eric Mutai, Hon. Judith Chirchir, the County Executive Committee Member for Education and Acting County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture and Livestock. CGA representatives included Dr. Moses Osia Mwanje, Business Partnerships and Development Lead, and Duncan Oalo, Regional Agribusiness Coordinator, among others. Also present were 20 farmers closely working with CGA in #Kericho County. CGA is implementing the Agroforestry Carbon Removal Units for Organic Restoration of Nature Project (Acorn) in Kericho County, alongside 11 other counties. This project aims to integrate sustainable agroforestry practices within farming communities, focusing on restoring degraded lands, enhancing soil fertility, and contributing to carbon removal efforts. Through this initiative, farmers will benefit from a more favourable environment for agricultural productivity while simultaneously helping to combat climate change by generating carbon credits. The County Government has committed to supporting the CGA-Acorn Agroforestry program. This MOU is expected to greatly enhance the services provided to smallholder farmers in Kericho County. #TogetherWeGrow

KBL, in partnership with the Cereal Growers Association (CGA) and the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, Narok, recently hosted a Farmers Field Day at Purko Sheep Ranch in Tipis, Narok County. The event brought together barley, wheat, canola, and green pea farmers under the theme "𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐩 𝐑𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲." It served as a platform for cereal growers and the broader agribusiness sector to exchange ideas, build connections, and explore business opportunities. Key partners in attendance included Bayer East Africa, Syngenta East Africa, BASF, SBM Bank Kenya , KENYA SEED COMPANY LTD, Case Machinery, ETG Fertilizer, Yara Fertilizer, Amiran Kenya Ltd, and Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service - Kephis. A major highlight of the day was KBL’s launch of two new barley varieties - 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 and 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞. These varieties, developed in collaboration with Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service - Kephis and approved by the National Variety Release Council (NVRC), offer superior traits, including: ✔ High yield potential of approximately 7.0 tons per hectare. ✔ Resistance to lodging. ✔ Moderate resistance to common barley diseases such as net blotch and scald. ✔ Excellent malting quality attributes. The introduction of these high-performing varieties ensures improved production and long-term sustainability in barley farming. Farmers also received training on best agricultural practices, including regenerative agriculture, which enhances soil health and boosts productivity. Additionally, they were educated on the proper use of recommended chemical products - covering aspects such as application rates, target pests, timing, methods of application, and overall safety standards. As Gerald Gacheru, our Head of Agribusiness, expressed, this initiative highlights KBL’s commitment to promoting sustainable and productive farming practices that benefit cereal growers and strengthen the entire agricultural value chain.

  • Yesterday marked the finale of TEJATI’s #agrireverse2025 festival at Nairobi’s ASK Dome! This flagship event supported TEJATI's national mission to inspire 3 million young Kenyans to embrace agriculture as a career path. Industry experts, innovators, and youth leaders, including our Farmer Service Centers (FSCs) from all the 13 counties supported by Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA) interventions and #vijanainkilimobiz participated and brainstormed on how young people can drive agricultural transformation, tackle unemployment, and build resilient food systems for Kenya’s future. Though the festival has wrapped up, the mission continues! Let’s keep empowering the youth to unlock agriculture’s potential for youth empowerment and national growth. #TogetherWeGrow #makingmarketsworkbetterforfarmers #vijanainkilimobiz
