Since our founding in 2009, COBEC has transformed and expanded into an organization that we deeply value and take pride in. Our wide range of projects aims to benefit both the environment and improve livelihoods in communities, from mangrove restoration to enhancing food security. Coastal areas in Kenya are facing the effects of climate change, and through community-based conservation efforts, we aim to equip communities with the resources to mitigate and adapt to these challenges. A big thank you to all our supporters, and we look forward to continuing this journey for another 15 years! #communitybased #mangroverestoration #communityengagement #livelihoodenhancement #climateaction

Community Based Environmental Conservation Organization for Climate Mitigation and Livelihood Enhancement
About us
COBEC, Community Based Environmental Conservation, was founded in 2009 in response to rising concerns about marine environmental degradation, destruction of mangrove forests, and increased sea turtle mortalities. Our mission is to assist local communities in preserving, safeguarding, and restore the natural resources they depend on and their habitats. We aim to ensure that the value of nature is reflected in decision-making from local to a global scale. COBEC achieves this by engaging strategically with communities, collaborating to reach sustainable solutions that align with environmental objectives. This approach enhances communication, facilitates information sharing, problem-solving, and empowers the community. By understanding the challenges, resources, and skills, solutions benefiting both the community and the environment can be developed. Our initiatives, such as 'Livelihood Enhancement,' encompass activities like mangrove planting, beekeeping, and projects focusing on food security and climate resilience. Additionally, we are involved in 'Habitat Restoration,' 'Sea Turtle Conservation,' 'Research and Monitoring,' and 'Conservation Education' programs.

If you are at COP29 Azerbaijan, please join this event tomorrow! It will be a great panel with Julius Sila, representing COBEC. Here are COBEC, we are so proud of our team members who are going to numerous conferences in Kenya and beyond to represent us and fight for #climateaction. Social Blue Carbon: Community as a Key to Sustainable and Investable Mangrove Reforestation Projects 📅 When: Thursday, 21 Nov 2024 🕥 Time: 10:30 – 11:30 📍 Where: Digital Innovation Pavilion, Area E, H9 (Blue Zone) #mangroverestoration #socialbluecarbon #communityengagement #sustainability #COP29
Mangrove reforestation is a powerful tool for carbon sequestration and climate resilience. Yet, its long-term success and commercial viability depend on something often overlooked: meaningful community involvement. Can aligning carbon project goals with local socio-economic priorities enhance project resilience and reduce investment risks? Are projects that share carbon revenue fairly and create local livelihoods better positioned for success and investor attention? These critical questions will be at the heart of our discussion at COP29, in an event hosted by Vlinder and moderated by our founder, Lena Mechenkova. 🌱 Social Blue Carbon: Community as a Key to Sustainable and Investable Mangrove Reforestation Projects 📅 When: Thursday, 21 Nov 2024 🕥 Time: 10:30 – 11:30 📍 Where: Digital Innovation Pavilion, Area E, H9 (Blue Zone) Panelists: Sandeep Roy Choudhury, VNV Advisory Services, Co-Founder & Director Julius Sila, COBEC Projects, Environmental Expert Hery Gunawan Daulay, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia, Deputy Director of Coastal Restoration Dr. Irina Fedorenko-Aula, Abatable, Head of Origination Alexey Shadrin, Evercity, Co-Founder & CEO Join us to explore how community engagement can align with impact-focused investor goals to create resilient, investable mangrove carbon projects. We are thrilled to see that our hard work is paying off! Bentley Motors magazine interviewed the SeaTrees Co-Founder Michael Stewart about the Bentley Environmental Foundation's projects with SeaTrees in Mida Creek. We believe at COBEC that it is essential to work with local communities to #conserve, #protect, and #restore the natural resources they depend on and their habitats. Our restoration program aims to enhance coastal ecosystem #sustainability and #resilience, especially through #mangroverestoration, to maintain an ecological balance. Thank you SeaTrees for your continued support! #mangroves #climateaction #bluecarbon #sustainability #BentleyEnvironmentalFoundation
The latest edition of the Bentley Motors magazine is live - with a very special feature from the Bentley Environmental Foundation's project with SeaTrees in Kenya. 🌊 We spoke to SeaTrees Co-Founder, Michael Stewart, about our joint project and why mangroves and other blue carbon ecosystems are so important in reversing climate change. 💙 Check out the article below 👇 👏 Luciano Della Mura Wayne Bruce Samuel Kelly Haley Jain Haggerstone #BentleyEnvironmentalFoundation #Change #Sustainability #Ocean

Here's how we help the local communities of Malindi Ungwana Bay (Kenya) to plant mangrove trees and improve their livelihoods: 🏫 1. Education: our local partner COBEC Projects educates the local communities on the importance of protecting mangroves for their livelihoods. Community scouts are trained to work together with forest rangers to protect the forest. The locals are also trained to find mangrove seedlings and start their own #mangrove nurseries. 💰 2. Buying the seedlings: we buy the seedlings from the local communities. They use the extra money earned to send their kids to school, improve their homes or invest in their future. #socialimpact ☘ 3. Tree Planting days: COBEC organized tree planting days, involving all relevant stakeholders and governments. 📈 4. The growth and survival rate of all mangrove trees is carefully monitored and a check is done after 3, 6 and 12 months. #biodiversityrestoration #biodiversityconservation

🌍 Biodiversity & Mangrove Restoration in Mida Creek, Kilifi County 🌱 Did you know? Mida Creek in Kilifi County is a biodiversity hotspot, home to unique ecosystems that support countless species. But this natural wonder is under threat from deforestation, pollution, and climate change. We need collective action to protect and restore it. Why Mida Creek’s Mangroves Matter: Mangroves are essential for coastal resilience, providing habitat for fish, birds, and other wildlife. They also act as natural barriers against erosion and storms, help capture carbon, and improve water quality. Our Restoration Efforts: At Community Based Environmental Conservation (COBEC), we're working with local communities to restore Mida Creek’s mangrove forests. By planting mangrove seedlings, educating communities, and advocating for sustainable practices, we’re helping to regenerate this fragile ecosystem. How You Can Help: 🌱 Volunteer in community restoration projects 💧 Reduce plastic use to keep our waterways clean 📢 Advocate for conservation policies in your community 💚 Support local conservation organizations like COBEC Let’s protect Mida Creek for future generations! #MidaCreek #BiodiversityConservation #MangroveRestoration #climatechange

🌱 Restoration is a Process: Science, Technology, and Local Knowledge Combined🌍 Successful ecosystem restoration is a multifaceted journey, blending the power of science, cutting-edge technology, and invaluable local and historical knowledge. From desktop planning to on-the-ground implementation, every step is driven by careful consideration of the ecosystem's past, present, and future. 🔭 With science as the backbone and technology like aerial mapping to track progress, restoration efforts are no longer guesswork but measured and strategic. These tools help assess and monitor the real-time impact of the restoration work, ensuring that we stay on track and maximize success for both people and nature. The future of restoration lies in this integrated approach—science, technology, and local wisdom working hand in hand. Together, we are paving the way for a more sustainable world. 🌿 #RestorationScience #EcosystemRestoration #TechForGood #LocalKnowledge #Sustainability #NatureBasedSolutions #AerialMapping #ConservationInnovation SeaTrees COBEC Projects Orion McCarthy Leah Hays
