Founder at RegisTree | Sustainable African Communities MA | Environmentalism and Rule of Law I Community Development I Composting is my Climate Action

Last week on Thursday, I had the privilege of attending the 9th Circular Economy Conference hosted by Sustainable Inclusive Business Kenya . As someone deeply passionate about the possibility and accessibility of sustainable waste management, this event reaffirmed my belief in the power of the circular economy to address many of our waste related challenges. Some of my key takeaways from the panel sessions I attended specifically: Agriculture and Food Systems, and Funding for SMEs in Circular Economy. ✅ Mindset shifts are essential: this is a recurring theme of all climate and environment talks -for our work at RegisTree behaviour change is our holy grail. For us to actually derive the proposed value, we need to effectively communicate our vision to our customers. ✅ Innovation starts small: From composting BSF systems to clean air systems showcased at the conference, no innovation is too small to have an impact, and nothing is out of reach. Localized efforts can have a ripple effect on environmental sustainability. ✅ Policy and community partnerships matter: Achieving circularity requires an inclusive approach that bridges industries, communities, and governments. I left inspired, and more determined than ever, to scale RegisTree’s impact through organic waste solutions and community-driven initiatives. Let’s embrace the opportunities in front of us and create circular systems that benefit us all.

As we wrap up this month (and the year, almost), we find ourselves reflecting on the journey of building RegisTree into a truly #impactdriven initiative. Working with and within our communities has shown us that environmental change is about so much more than just strategy; it’s about relationships, understanding local contexts, and #empowering people to be part of the solution. This month, we piloted new methods, like our Black Soldier Fly composting, in response to feedback and challenges faced in our #vermicomposting. Every step is an experiment, a test of resilience, and a lesson in #adaptability. Impact-focused work pushes us to consider multiple pathways to our goals. From collaborating with #localfarmers to experimenting with hybrid composting techniques, we’re reminded that there’s rarely one “right way” to approach #sustainability. Each challenge invites us to innovate, collaborate, and explore new strategies to create value—environmental, social, and economic. At RegisTree, we’re committed to maximizing our positive footprint, but we’re equally dedicated to building an inclusive, community-oriented model of environmental stewardship. As we grow, we’re excited to continue learning, adapting, and building with the communities around us. Here’s to collective action, ongoing experimentation, and a more sustainable future for all. #CommunityCollaboration #SustainabilityJourney #EnvironmentalImpact #InnovationInComposting #Climateaction

As we wrap up the week, we reflect on the World Food Day 2024: Right to Food, Right to Waste Less. At RegisTree, we believe access to food and responsible #wastemanagement go hand-in-hand. The theme for this year, “Right to Food: For a Better Life and a Better Future,” reminds us that #foodsecurity is not just about what we consume but also how we manage what’s left behind. By turning #organicwaste into #compost, we contribute to sustainable food systems that nourish the soil, reduce methane emissions, and promote #localagriculture. But this only works if organic waste stays uncontaminated! Let’s practice source separation—keeping food waste clean and plastics out. Together, we can fight hunger, reduce waste, and create a greener future. #WorldFoodDay #RightToFood #WasteManagementKE #RegisTree #ClimateAction #SustainableAgriculture #Composting #community

Our CEO Fardosa Mustafa had the incredible opportunity to represent RegisTree at the Africa Waste is Wealth Series 2024 #AWWS2024 #AWWSII, where we explored the theme of accelerating sustainable initiatives and redefining waste as a resource rather than an inconvenience. One of the key takeaways was the urgent need for a paradigm shift across all stakeholders in #wastemanagement. The costs of waste mismanagement are staggering, while recovering value from waste can create significant economic and environmental benefits. We are excited about the launch of the #EastAfricaWasteManagementConsortium, which aligns with efforts towards a regional single-use plastics bill at the east african legislative assembly. With manufacturers like Unilever and Biofoods present, it’s clear that collaboration is essential—everyone has a role to play in effective waste management, as emphasized by the National Environment Management Authority's (#NEMA) Director General Mamo Boru Mamo, EBS It was refreshing to see a focus on #organicwaste during one of the panels, especially since many waste conferences often overlook this aspect. A highlight was the recognition of #indigenousknowledge in organic waste management, shared by Founder of Mananasi Fibre LTD (James Boyd-Moss) We also discussed the realities of implementing and financing organic waste upgrading. We need adaptable solutions and technologies that can be scaled at the community level, reaffirming our commitment to developing a replicable #communitybasedwastemanagement model. None of this is feasible without robust social systems that drive behavior change—starting with waste separation at source to reduce contamination and facilitate material recovery. Day 2 featured the presentation of the draft East African Community (Prohibition of Manufacturing, Importation, Use and Sale of Single Use) #PlasticsBill, 2023 emphasizing not just harmonization of laws but also their implementation. This is rooted in the #EastAfricanCommunityTreaty and #GlobalPlasticsTreaty. Overall, this conference was a fantastic platform for networking with the prominent stakeholders represented and reinforcing our mission at RegisTree to create #sustainablesolutions for our communities! And finally, heartfelt gratitude to Carlotta Dal Lago and Dipesh Pabari for the opportunity to attend the conference #WasteManagement #Sustainability #RegisTree #CircularEconomy #CommunityEngagement #AfricaWasteisWealth TakaTaka Ni Mali The FlipFlopi Project Kenya National Cleaner Production Centre ALN Kenya | Anjarwalla & KhannaKenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) ISWA International Solid Waste Association east african legislative assembly UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

In celebration of #WorldSafeAbortionDay, RegisTree, in partnership, with KELIN, organised a clean-up activity in Mtwapa Castam Beach. This was not just a clean-up, it was also about #sexualhealth, #safeabortion, and #familyplanning According to the Kenyan Constitution Article 26(4), life is a fundamental right to everybody, but it sets a limit on how life can be terminated, especially in the case of an abortion. This includes when the life of the mother is in danger, but should be authorized by a train health professional. #reproductiverights #communitybuilding

A couple months ago, we provided community households with Mchakato bins, and we wanted to do a follow-up activity to hear the feedback. Overall, it was mostly positive! We also visited another local shop and spoke to them about the benefits of #wastemanagement, and afterwards, we provided them a Mchakato Bin. From our conversation, we learned that they were dumping their waste around their shop which created an unpleasant environment for their neighbors. Lastly, we helped pick out the #organicwaste from their dump site. They were extremely happy to receive the bins and promised to cooperate with us! Change isn't something that is quick, but a process that requires dedication on all sides. We are thrilled to have the support of the community! #communitybased #climateaction

This weekend, RegisTree participated in the 'International Coastal Clean-Up Day March' and the beach clean-up activity afterwards. The march took place from Timboni to Blue Bay beach with other organizations and schools. It was fantastic to see so much involvement from the community, and when we come together, we can make a difference for a cleaner, healthier town. During our #beachcleanup from Dongokundu to Jacaranda, Watamu, we collected 2357kg of trash. We love supporting and uplifting our community for a better future! #internationalcoastalcleanupday #climateaction #wastemanagement #bettertomorrow Madaraka Katana

According to RegisTree, promoting consumer environmental consciousness is important and one of our main goal. To achieve this, we have incorporated various of the effective strategies in our operations which include: 1. Community Engagement and Education. This involves organizing workshops, door-to-door awareness programs, and clean-up activities to educate community members about the importance of waste segregation, recycling, and composting. 2. Partnerships and Collaboration. By working with local stakeholders, including schools, restaurants, and community groups, to establish partnerships that promote waste management and environmental stewardship. 3. Accessible Waste Management Solutions. We also provide practical solutions like the 'Mchakato Bins' initiative, where consumers receive bins and reusable bags to encourage proper waste disposal and segregation at the source. 4. Demonstration of Impact. By showcasing results, such as the amount of waste collected and fertilizer produced, we build trust and highlight the tangible impact of sustainable practices on the environment. 5. Youth Involvement. We engage local youth through training and employment opportunities, which not only builds capacity but also creates a ripple effect of environmental awareness in the community. 6. Incentives and Positive Reinforcement. Offering incentives for proper waste disposal and recycling, such as discounts on compost or other products, we encourage more sustainable consumer behavior. These strategies are designed to make environmental consciousness practical, accessible, and impactful for consumers, fostering a community-oriented approach to sustainability.

Upcoming Ethnic and Migration Studies MA Graduate '25 | Interest in Climate (Im)mobility

My time in Kenya has come to an end after 3 months, and I want to say a huge thank you to two organizations that has made my time here incredible. Thank you COBEC Projects and RegisTree for allowing me to volunteer and be a part of your journey to climate adaptation and mitigation. Both of these organizations are founded and headed by Kenyans and emphasize community-based approaches. COBEC Projects is a community based environmental conservation organization that focuses on mangrove restoration, and they work directly with the Kenya Forest Service and #coastalcommunities to understand the needs of the area, from where to plant but also support alternative livelihoods. They help communities expand their sources of income, such as mangrove nurseries, apiculture, food security and climate resilience projects, and implement programs like BlueBiz that help community members utilize the opportunities in the #blueeconomy. RegisTree is a social enterprise that focuses on #wastemanagement and #composting in rural communities like in Mida Creek. They work with the Mida Marine Conservation Initiative to provide alternative sources of income to its members, particularly youth and women. These past three months have taught me a lot about waste management and sustainability, both in Kenya and abroad. It has been a pleasure working so closely with RegisTree and the community members of Mida Creek. Thank you Fardosa Mustafa for taking a leap of faith on me during that phone call in Sweden, and Julius Sila for inviting me on numerous mangrove planting activities. Thank you Edward Mwamuye for allowing me to volunteer with COBEC, and Madaraka Katana it has been a pleasure working with you so closely. I have met so many incredible people during my time here, and it will be very difficult to leave. As I always like to say, it's never a goodbye but a 'see you later!' #volunteering #internship #communitybased #kenya
