    Rethinking Choices helps you thrive.

My friend sent me a picture of a youth shot eight times yesterday in Nairobi. He did not survive. The youth was a student at a top university, and one that is associated with wealthy parents. Tragedy affects everyone. I was at that university last year for the inauguration of the East Africa Campuses and Colleges Green Network (EACCGN) Email us info@eaccgn.org. This is a youth led network to look after our common home. My friend is one of the founders. This terrible shooting is a siren of the impossible situation we are in. The tragedy is triggered by debt. Kenya, despite rapid growth, is heavily indebted. The country has been running with a budget deficit that keeps the debt increasing. The last time the budget was in surplus was a blip in 2005, and two more blips before that in 2000 and 1999. This is a familiar story. Whether it is the US, EU, China, or a country like Kenya, we have laden our governments with expectations, and at each electoral cycle politicians promise they will deliver. They do this through debt. Some economists nowadays say debt has no consequences. They say, who cares as long as you can print your own money? I owe you 10 bucks? Not a problem. Two hundred trillion? Just let me start up more printers. Debt matters because debt is confidence on the future. Every time we take out debt, we are telling ourselves, tomorrow will be just fine. That's how we tell ourselves it's okay to spend more today. In Kenya, this story is facing a different reality. Everyone in the country knows someone who has been affected by drought, floods, or both in the past year or two. They have seen them lose their life savings. This has come through medical bills, lost crops and livestocks, unpaid earnings. They are seeing climate change and it's implications. And, it's just the beginning. Climate change makes people's lives more expensive. Sometimes, this leads to tragedy. If governments' responses are to shoot first and blame later, then we are in for more than a bumpy ride. What do governments need to do? Our thoughts are they need to help people reach their economic potential. People need to believe the world has a place for them. They can do this by increasing their unique economic presence. That's how nature thrives; that's how we need to thrive. At Rethinking Choices we will be launching Thrive in September. This is a novel consultancy for businesses, communities, and individuals so that they may thrive with climate change. It is inspired by nature's economy to build economic presence through experimentation. We will set up ThriveLabs with our partnering clients including our friend who sent us the picture so that they may increase their unique economic presence. If you are sensing the wind of change and maybe feeling lost, get in touch so that you can open up your curiosity for a better way to thrive. #thrive #climatechange #business #community #individual #UK

    Planet V Plastic

On 22 April 2024, I teamed up with colleagues and individuals from different organizations to commemorate World Earth Day where we did create awareness on the effects of plastics in our ecosystem and ways to solve the menace created by these plastics. Together with representatives from East Africa Campuses and Colleges Green Network (EACCGN) Email us info@eaccgn.org Vijiji Hub Kenya Plogging Kenya and @SED, we did a clean up around Dandora police station. We also unclogged a dyke that had been blocked by plastics. This was a clear indicator of the contributors of the drainage problems experienced in Nairobi and it's environs during these rainy seasons, where the system does not allow enough seepage thus volumes of rainwater remain on the surface leading to various problems, either immeadiate or cumulative. Waste management remains a serious problem in our country. In our discussions, we pointed out that aren't enough strategies such as waste segregation and sorting making recycling and up-cycling a tall order. Furthermore, consumer and producer responsibility isn't adhered to sufficiently. Most produce plastics in various forms and go ahead to label them recyclable while they abandon that responsibility. Consumers on the other hand dispose inappropriately, forgetting they are most vulnerable to the effects of same disposals. We commit to come up with strategies and innovations that will enable mitigation of this problem, and as well motivate fellow youths to take action to this call. Special thanks to SIR COLLINS MANYASI Zablon Ogolla Annan Mecha Winstone Aligula Bravin Otieno Flavian Wanzala @Faith Chumba Annette Wamocha and many others with whom we took the initiative.
