To end #GivingTuesday2025, here’s a message from our co-founder Mary Maker! “Hello Beautiful People, Happy Giving Tuesday! As we reflect on the Thanksgiving holiday, Elimisha Kakuma is excited to participate in this global day of giving. We want to share our major needs for 2025 as we prepare to welcome our 5th cohort of students. One of our top priorities is ensuring that our students have access to nutritious meals, which are essential for their learning and growth. Here’s how you can help: It costs $23 to feed one student for a month. To provide meals for 16 new students throughout 2025, we need to raise $4,320. Your support makes a lasting impact, and every gift is deeply appreciated. Together, we can continue to nourish minds and transform lives. Thank you for being a part of our journey!” To donate, click here: https://lnkd.in/d2QbSHVc

About us
Elimisha Kakuma ("Educate Kakuma" in Swahili) is an intensive university-preparatory program designed to provide opportunities for high school graduates in Kakuma Refugee Camp. The program helps students prepare for university-level content and apply for university scholarships, thereby making higher education accessible. Founded by Kakuma's own, Elimisha believes that when students are provided with access to higher education, they are more likely to create a larger impact by empowering families and changing communities for the better.

Happy #GivingTuesday2024 from Elimisha Kakuma 🌟 🌟 🌟 It costs $23 a month to provide breakfast and lunch to an Elimisha student. By donating $23 a month or a total of $276, you can fund a student's breakfast and lunch in Kakuma Refugee Camp for an entire year. In a place where rations aren't sufficient, we make sure our students have two solid meals while working all day at our center. Your donations are pivotal in making this possible. Today, you can make a lasting impact in the lives of refugee students, and as our co-founder Mary Maker said, be the change. Donate here: https://lnkd.in/d2QbSHVc

On this #GivingTuesday, learn about the incredible story of our co-founder Mary Maker, and the daily efforts of Elimisha Kakuma to support refugees in their higher education journey. Consider donating to Elisha Kakuma here: https://lnkd.in/d2QbSHVc
In her speech, Camp to Campus, Mary Maker recounts her experience living at Kakuma Refugee Camp after fleeing war in southern Sudan. "It was a place where people became numbers, anonymous stories—or worse, untold stories. A never-ending circle of war and conflict." Mary co-founded Elimisha Kakuma to provide access to higher education opportunities for high school graduates living in the Camp. Alongside UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, we're working to ensure that no populations face barriers to education, investing in those that are not able to access testing around the globe. With a supportive community, we can integrate refugees into a network, guide them through the confusion and loneliness of being away from home, and collectively address the barriers they face. I’m grateful for The PIE and for Amy Baker, Jane Gilham, and Clare Gossage for introducing me to Mary Maker and Elimisha Kakuma at the PIE Live in Boston last year, and for supporting our efforts, as their charity of the year in 2024, allowing us to continue our work to provide access to higher education opportunities for high school graduates living in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya.

From refugee to global advocate, Mary Maker’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of education. A South Sudanese refugee, Mary found hope in Kenya’s Kakuma Refugee Camp, where she transitioned from student to teacher, empowering young refugees, especially girls, to embrace education as a tool for rebuilding their lives. As a scholarship student, Mary graduated with honors in theatre and international relations from St. Olaf College, USA, while founding Elimisha Kakuma, a nonprofit connecting over 30 students in the camp to higher education. Now a UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Goodwill Ambassador, Mary uses her platform to champion refugee education and inclusion, sharing her story at global events like the UN General Assembly and Global Washington’s Women of the World Breakfast. Her advocacy reminds us all: “For the child of war, an education can turn their tears of loss into a passion for peace.” Having the opportunity to meet Mary in person was a highlight of this week's #PIELIVE24 event. Her joy and passion are contagious and I look forward to seeing the good she continues to do in the world. Thank you for all the hard work The PIE team contributed to making this year's event a success as always! 😊 Dr. Maureen Manning Amy Baker Clare Gossage Damla Erciyeş Lauren Nunan Polly Nash Katie Williams Nicholas Cuthbert Rachel Donnellan Jane Gilham #ThePIE #IEW #IEW2024 #InternationalEducation #GlobalEducation #Inspiration #GlobalCommunity #CampusCommunity

As always, Mary Maker exemplifies what is possible when refugee students are supported, and inspires us to always lend a helping hand to those that need it the most. In her words, "We are the change."
“Remind international students that they’re valid; remind them that they’re seen – because often they feel like imposters on those campuses. Remind them to be authentic.” Mary Maker, Refugee Activist and Co-Founder of Elimisha Kakuma delivers the closing plenary of #PIELIVE24 in Boston, with these powerful words, offering delegates at the conference the key message: "We are the change we are looking for in international education." #education #inspirational #intled
