In 1995, Kenyan civil society members went to Beijing for the Fourth World Conference on Women. Amid discussions of poverty, health, violence, and education, they encouraged delegates to consider the unique experience of the girl child. They knew that issues like child marriage, female genital mutilation, and lack of access to education were all too real for girls they knew and girls around the world.
When they left Beijing in September of 1995, these women had the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which outlined nine objectives for work related to the girl child. They also had a plan for making these objectives a reality in East Africa: create a unified and informed network of organizations and individuals working with girls. For the next three years, they built these connections along with a strong, field-tested knowledge base.
In 1998, Girl Child Network officially registered as an NGO in Kenya. Soon after, in 2000, one of the original visionaries came to work for GCN full time. Mercy Musomi is still our Executive Director today. She has never stopped dreaming—or sharing her dream—of a brighter future for girls in East Africa.
Since then, we have grown from a staff of one to a staff of 33. In addition to facilitating a network of over 300 organizations, we also directly implement projects that empower girls to learn and lead. We’ve used our expertise in gender and child rights to carry out research and influence policy. Over 20 years later, the girls we know are still inspiring us to build a world that’s better for all children.
Thrilled to have been a part of the Youth Employability Summit 2024 where disability inclusion in TVETs and the workforce took center stage. As we move towards a more inclusive future, it is crucial that we continue to advocate for strategic policies that support people with disabilities in every sector. Let's work towards creating #InclusiveWorkplaces and ensuring #EqualEmployment opportunities for all. Let's make disability rights a priority in our professional spaces. Together, we can build a more diverse and empowered workforce. 🛠️ #DisabilityInclusion#YouthEmpowerment#ChangeMakersNairobi City County
Our Last dinner in 2024 as members of the Gender and Education Dialogues was truly eye-opening and inspiring, as we delved into the critical topic of girls' agency and education. It was a powerful reminder that when we invest in girls, we invest in our future. As we discussed the challenges and barriers faced by young girls in accessing education, it became clear that building a strong foundation of agency is crucial in breaking these barriers and empowering them to reach their full potential. Let's continue to prioritize #GenderEquality and #EducationalEmpowerment and create a world where every girl has the opportunity to thrive. #BuildingStrongFoundations#GirlsEducation

What a day Yesterday was! I am still on cloud nine after the incredible cake cutting ceremony we had to mark the end of our eventful day. 🎂 It was more than just a sweet treat; it symbolized our unity and determination to fight against violence and bring about positive change in our communities. 💪🏼
It was heartwarming to see everyone come together, regardless of backgrounds and differences, to support a common cause. This is the true spirit of activism - standing in solidarity and working towards a better future for all. 💚
As we wrap up the #16DaysOfActivism, let's remember that our fight for a safer and more equitable society doesn't end here. We must continue to raise our voices, educate ourselves and others, and take action to create lasting change. Together, we rise. ✨
A big thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday and contributed to this meaningful event. Let's keep the momentum going and spread the message of #UnityInActivism.
Here's to more moments of unity
As we mark the international day for persons with disabilities, we are proud to have been a part of the celebration at Kajiado KBC grounds. The theme for this year, "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future", truly highlights the crucial role that individuals with disabilities play in shaping our society. I was moved by the determination and resilience of those who have overcome challenges to become leaders in their own right.
In addition to celebrating the accomplishments of persons with disabilities, we also had the opportunity to support Children with Disabilities (CWDs) through the screening and registration process. Thanks to the generous support of AIC Child Care Center, CWDs were provided with much-needed assistive devices such as white canes and wheelchairs.
It is heartwarming to see organizations and communities coming together to empower individuals with disabilities and create a more inclusive and sustainable future. Let us continue to recognize and support the leadership and contributions of persons with disabilities in our society. #InternationalDayofPersonswithDisabilities#Empowerment#Inclusion#SustainabilityNational Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD)AIC Child Care CentreWorld VisionLight Up HopeKenya Redcross SocietyThe Action Foundation

On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, let us not only celebrate the progress we have made but also acknowledge the work that still needs to be done. We must continue to advocate for the rights and needs of individuals with disabilities, both in the workplace and in society as a whole. Together, we can create a world where everyone has equal opportunities to succeed. #DisabilityAwareness#InclusionIsKey#InternationalDisability
As we enter the month of December, let us not forget the pressing issue of gender-based violence that continues to plague our society. It is a problem that affects millions of women and girls worldwide, and it is time for us to take a stand and put an end to it.
That's why I am excited to announce the 16 Days of Activism Walk in Thika on December 4th. This event is a powerful call to action, bringing together individuals and organizations to raise awareness and show their support for a world free from violence against women and girls.
By joining this walk, we are not only taking a step towards creating a safer and more equal society but also amplifying the voices of those who have been silenced for too long. It is a chance for us to show our solidarity and commitment to ending gender-based violence once and for all.
I urge all of my connections to mark their calendars and join us in this impactful event. Let's walk together and make a difference in the fight against gender-based violence. Together, we can create a world where everyone, regardless of their gender, can live without fear. #16DaysOfActivism#EndGBV#ThikaWalk
As we continue to navigate through these challenging times, it's important that we also address the pressing issue of gender-based violence. Every day, women around the world face the harsh reality of living in fear of abuse. This is unacceptable. As professionals, it is our responsibility to use our voices and platforms to advocate for the safety, dignity, and respect of every woman. Let's unite and take a stand against abuse and empower women to live a life free from violence. Together, we can make a difference and create a safer world for all. #StopAbuse#EmpowerWomen#EndGBV#16DaysOfActivism
