Last week, a team of creative and passionate colleagues at GIZ Kenya embarked on a mission to transform the ordinary into extraordinary. By upcycling discarded banners, they're not only reducing waste but also empowering women in #Kakuma. Following their award for the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH global sustainability challenge, Esther Muthee , Lorraine Wakesho Ochola & Jennifer Miguya were committed to finding sustainable solutions to our office waste. Our colleagues traveled to Kakuma to train women on the art of upcycling banners into stunning products, from tote bags to pencil cases. This project aims to not only generates income for these women but also raises awareness about sustainable practices Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. The upcycled products will be showcased and sold at the BizBaz Christmas Festival in Gigiri, Nairobi, later this month.

🤝 Strong economic ties between Germany and Africa not only have advantages for companies, but also advance the global Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). This is the message coming out of the German-African Business Summit (GABS) 2024 in Nairobi. ▶️ As part of the summit, together with DEG Impulse and Agentur für Wirtschaft und Entwicklung, we have launched a new practical advisory service for private companies: the Partners in Transformation Desk supports them from the business idea to reliable partnerships in East Africa. 🗨️ At the same time, the Business Leaders Forum, which we helped launch two months ago at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, is entering its next round in #Nairobi. The forum, hosted by GIZ's Managing Director Anna Sophie Herken, builds strong networks and promotes exchange between the private sector and government representatives. #PublicPrivatePartnership #SustainableFinance Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) Afrika-Verein der deutschen Wirtschaft (German - African Business Association) BDI - Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V., DIHK, COMESA Secretariat, Ministry of Investments,Trade and Industry

#Healthysoils are essential for #foodsecurity and #climateresilience. This World Soil Day, the emphasize is on the need for accurate soil data to guide informed decisions on soil management. Addressing the soil health topics is at the core of the GIZ Kenya #ProSoil project - #ProSoil through it’s implementing partners @Welthungerhilfe (WHH), EcoSustinet County Government of Siaya, Bungoma, & Kakamega supports the development and use of soil information to address soil and food security challenges through capacity strengthening, awareness raising and direct field implementation with farmers. By improving soil health, we can increase agricultural productivity by up to 58%, a crucial step in meeting the anticipated 60% rise in food demand by 2050. #UdongoNiMali

Investing in the Future: Empowering County Auditors# Earlier this year, the Cabinet of Kenya approved the Government’s transition from #CashBasisAccounting to #AccrualBasisAccounting. Consequently, the #NationalTreasury, published the transition vide Gazette Notices No.11033 and No.10892 of 30th August 2024 affecting #National and #CountyGovernments. The main objective of the transition is to enhance #transparency, #accountability and efficiency in government. In this regard, #CapacityBuilding of various technical teams and stakeholders is essential to equip them with the requisite knowledge and skills for a successful transition. To ensure a smooth transition to accrual accounting, GIZ Kenya's Good Governance Program, in collaboration with the National Treasury, conducted a three-day training session in November. This training equipped 30 internal auditors and audit committee members from #Kisumu, #Vihiga, and #ElgeyoMarakwet counties with the necessary skills and knowledge. The transition shall take a phased approach for a 3-year period since the various standards (International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) guiding the transition will be implemented in phases. Some of the benefits of accrual accounting include: Standardization of Financial Statements (FS) promotes comparability and consolidation of the FS as required by the PFM Act 2012. ☑️ It promotes transparency, effectiveness and efficiency of oversight. ☑️ It acknowledges and plans for the payment of all recognized liabilities, not just borrowings. ☑️ It provides for better management of assets with respect to maintenance, more appropriate replacement policies and identification and disposal of surplus assets. ☑️ It provides information on the impact of existing liabilities on future resources. ☑️ It supports improved nature of audit opinions from the Office of the Auditor General. Through the Good Governance programe (GOGO), GIZ Kenya remains committed to support both the National and County governments during this transition period! GOGO is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH through GIZ Kenya, and is funded by Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
