#COP29 is in the books! The outcome of the negotiations has left many disappointed in view of the accelerating climate crisis and the response that is needed. But the agreement on tripling of climate finance by 2035 and the road towards 1.3 trillion USD is a step into the right direction keeping the climate process alive in very difficult times. A lot of open issues have to be addressed in 2025, especially working on ambitious NDCs will be very crucial. Nevertheless (or rather because of this), I would like to remind us today of the bright spots which give us a glimmer of hope. Beyond the negotiations, climate conferences are always a good opportunity for fostering partnerships. It is motivating to meet many long-standing colleagues and friends from the climate community who are all pushing in the same direction – to achieve the 1.5 degree target and to protect people against the devastating effects of climate change. At the end of this years’ COP29 Azerbaijan, I would like to send a huge thank you to the many partners I was able to meet and for the highly intellectual conversations we had. 🌍The issue of climate-friendly solutions has been the subject of much discussion at #COP29 in Baku. If you are interested in #NatureBasedSolutions, you might want to take a look at the report “Sustainable Asset Valuation (SAVi) of Aquaculture in Madagascar” we just published with Shamba Centre for Food & Climate. Madagascar's population is expected to double to fifty million in the next thirty years. Sustainable solutions must be developed to ensure food security and at the same time protect the country's natural resources. We support Madagascar in protecting its environment and biodiversity, making agriculture more climate-neutral and improving its energy supply. 🌾🐟 Find out more about our work in Madagascar: https://lnkd.in/exPp-Uvn
🐟 To mark #WorldFisheriesDay2024, we’re pleased to launch a new report in collaboration with Shamba Centre for Food & Climate Centre and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, valuing sustainable aquaculture systems in Madagascar! Our analysis found that extensive systems with a nature-based approach perform 36% better than intensive ones when external factors like environmental, social, and economic impacts are accounted for. In Madagascar, 80% of the population lives in rural areas, often with limited access to protein-rich foods. This has contributed to undernourishment and malnutrition. Fish are a vital source of nutrients and are widely eaten in coastal and urban centers, but lack of access is leaving rural populations at a disadvantage. Sustainable aquaculture methods hold great potential to change this. Rice-fish farming, integrates fish cultivation with rice paddies, offering mutual benefits: fish get a sheltered habitat and insects to feed on, while rice plants are naturally fertilized by fish waste. However, currently only 20% of suitable fields are used for rice-fish farming, despite the clear benefits. The Projet d'Aquaculture Durable à Madagascar (PADM), funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, is addressing this challenge. Covering six target regions, it promotes rice-fish and pond culture, benefiting 15,815 fish farms and local communities with enhanced nutrition and livelihood opportunities. We assessed the full spectrum of aquaculture systems from intensive to extensive. Home stretch at #COP29! #GreenSkills are a key topic at this year's discussions and negotiations. The global green transition offers great employment potential. However, currently there is still a critical shortage of skilled workers in climate-related professions. This poses a major challenge for the global green transition and exacerbates the negative effects of climate change. Early, accelerated and coordinated investment in green skills development is needed to achieve climate goals and social justice. At COP29, our Managing Director Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven advocated for a transformation that puts people at the center. Now she shares a first review of key side events and discussions with partners and climate policy stakeholders in #Baku.
Much discussed and high on the agenda at #COP29 in Baku: the need for people-centered climate action and promoting #GreenSkills for a #JustTransition. An estimate suggests that a delay in climate and energy projects due to skills shortage could lead to additional global warming of 0.1 degrees (BCG, 2023). Thus, skills development is a cornerstone for a successful transformation; only equipped with the right skills can we empower workers and communities around the globe to adapt, thrive, and fully participate in the emerging green economy. 🌍Very grateful that this topic has reached the international debate and that we have been able to engage in dedicated discussions with our partners and partner countries at COP29 Azerbaijan. Still reflecting the #HumanDevelopment Day, I would like to share some insights today: ✅Our “High-Level Roundtable on Skills for the Green and Just Economy” gathered representatives from governments, UN agencies, businesses, development finance and cooperation agencies and philanthropies. What a tremendous energy there was in the packed room! Participants strongly agreed with the need for an initiative to advance skills and jobs for the Green and Just Economy and help frame a global agenda, mobilise action in countries and engage with the private sector. Thank you very much to COP29 High Level Climate Champion Nigar Arpadarai for co-chairing! And of course to Systemiq Ltd. World Resources Institute NDC Partnership and edc.org, who are driving this initiative forward together with GIZ. ✅At our side event “Accelerating Skills for the Green and Just Economy”, we explored from different country perspectives why skills development is crucial for just green transitions. Special thanks to my fellow panelists Mia Seppo International Labour Organization Aisha Humera Chaudhary GIZ Pakistan Ana Paula Machado GIZ Brasil Pablo Abba Vieira Samper Shameela Soobramoney (She/Her) National Business Initiative Liesbet Steer. ✅And as the “final act”, GIZ together with CEB - Council of Europe Development Bank and Universität Heidelberg organized the side event “Green Skills for the Future: Unlocking Investment for the Global Just Transition”. I would also like to thank all my colleagues for the preparations in the background, and my fellow campaigners for the energetic discussion on stage: Mark Lawrence Forschungsinstitut für Nachhaltigkeit (RIFS) Dr. Max Jungmann Brian Mantlana Presidential Climate Commission Pham Van Tan Olga Strietska-Ilina Jochen Renger Sonja Berdau Gregor Sahler Let's now put this topic into action together!

🌍Today at #COP29 the focus is on Oceans and Coastal Zones as well as Nature and Biodiversity. Fittingly, we have launched a new project in Tanzania to protect their coastal and marine regions. Tanzania's coasts are part of a large ecosystem that harbours a unique biodiversity. They also provide a livelihood for the majority of coastal communities. However, unsustainable management and climate change are threatening the region. It is therefore important that we find #SustainableSolutions to protect the coastal and marine regions. 🌊🐠 Learn more about our work for Tanzanias coasts: https://lnkd.in/dgE-p6a5
📣 📣 🌊 🎉 Today, we are thrilled to officially launch the Project “Conservation and sustainable management of coastal and marine regions of mainland Tanzania” [Pwani Yetu – Our Coast]. This multi-donor action is jointly co-financed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and the European Union. It is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) as Tanzania's contribution to the regional project "Transboundary marine and coastal conservation and sustainable management in Kwale, Kenya and Tanga, Tanzania" financed by BMUV as part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The European Union co-finances Pwani Yetu through the Team Europe Initiative “Blue Economy for Job Creation and Climate Change Adaptation” in Tanzania. This transformative project is implemented in collaboration with the government of Tanzania, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Mwambao Coastal Community Network as partners.

#NatureAndBiodiversityDay at #COP29! Today it’s all about protecting the biodiversity and nature of our planet. 🌱🌍 How can #livestock be part of the solution to manage the earth’s #biodiversity sustainably? As stewards of over a quarter of the world’s land, livestock keepers - particularly across the global south - manage ecosystems that support both people and the planet. When managed sustainably, livestock systems can enhance biodiversity, improve soil health, and restore ecosystems. Together with our partners International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), African Union - Inter African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), WWF, SNV, and Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, we explore in this paper how nature-positive livestock practices can contribute to positive interactions between livestock and biodiversity in low and middle income countries (LMIC). We tried to bring balance and fresh perspectives to the conversation while addressing challenges and opportunities. Read more about how sustainable livestock management can restore ecosystems🌾👇 COP29 Azerbaijan
