Land degradation affects up to 40% of the Earth's surface, and half of humanity. As land loses vitality, its ability to support and protect life also erodes. We have already altered 70 percent of all ice-free land, impacting over 3.2 billion people. At current rates, 90% of land will bear our imprint by 2050. The impacts of land degradation will be felt by most of the world’s population. Land degradation also changes and disrupts rainfall patterns, exacerbates extreme weather like droughts or floods, and drives further climate change. It results in social and political instability, which drives poverty, conflict, and migration. https://lnkd.in/gXqzJjEe UN Convention to Combat Desertification

Forests cover ⅓ of the Earth's land mass, serving as critical pillars for both environmental health and human well-being. Recognizing forests' role in achieving a sustainable future is crucial, especially in the context of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. https://lnkd.in/dvSMuYNh #gpi2050

Great news from Denmark! Danish lawmakers have agreed to 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝟭𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 and natural habitats to reduce fertilizer usage, and to 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝟭 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 over the next two decades. The agreement is considered the biggest change to the Danish landscape in over 100 years. 𝟰𝟯 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗸𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿 ($6.1 billion) has been earmarked for land acquisition from farmers in the next 20 years. Danish forests will grow on 250,000 hectares and 140,000 hectares, which are currently cultivated on climate-damaging low-lying soils, will be converted to nature. Currently, 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝟭𝟰.𝟲% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁, which is one of the lowest numbers among European countries. 🏡Urban trees are integral to sustainable city development as highlighted by United Nations initiatives like the Trees in Cities Challenge. These efforts aim not only at increasing tree cover but also at fostering a holistic approach towards environmental #management that includes social equity and community involvement The challenge promotes awareness among policymakers about the benefits of urban forestry, which include: 🌄Climate Mitigation: Urban trees play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide, thus helping to mitigate climate change. 🏞Biodiversity: They provide habitats for various species, contributing to urban biodiversity 🏙Public Health: Increased greenery can improve air quality and promote physical and mental well-being among residents 🏕Social Cohesion: Green spaces foster community interaction and engagement.

🌳 What's in a tree trunk? To understand what is in the tree trunk, we can break it down into several key components that make up its structure and function. The trunk of a tree serves as a vital support system and transport mechanism for nutrients and water. David Attenborough | Green Planet | BBC

Thanks Gilgil Treatment Industries (GTi) for growing a #legacy!
🌍 Growing a Greener Future Together! 🌱 GTi is excited to spotlight our impactful tree planting initiative in Elgeyo Marakwet, a collaborative effort spanning 2022 and 2023. Taking place at one of Kenya’s key water towers, this ambitious project brought together Festus Kiplagat and his team from Green Planet Initiative 2050™ 🌳, with the incredible support of Moses Kiptanui, Olympic Gold Medalist and Steeplechase Champion. Together, we planted an astounding 45,000 trees, making a lasting positive impact on this vital region. With the dedication of our GTi team, we introduced four essential tree species to the ecosystem: 1) Eucalyptus – Enhancing timber production and supporting local livelihoods. 2) Bamboo – Protecting critical water catchment areas. 3) Cypress – Improving soil stability and fostering biodiversity. 4) Wattle – Controlling erosion and reinforcing ecological balance. This initiative not only underscores the importance of preserving Kenya’s water towers, but also reflects GTi’s unwavering commitment to sustainability, community collaboration, and environmental stewardship. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Festus, Moses, and every member of the GTi team who contributed to this shared vision. Together, let’s continue to plant, grow, and protect Kenya’s natural resources for future generations! 🌳💚 #Sustainability #TreePlanting #GreenPlanetInitiative2050 #GTi #MosesKiptanui #KenyanOlympian #EnvironmentalImpact #WaterTowers #CommunityEngagement
