Our #Cohort57 alumna Hannah Njambi, is a Cartographer and Entrepreneur from Kenya, running Jani Maps, where she tells Kenyan stories through maps as canvas wall art. Before YALI, she developed her second wall art product, upcycling aluminum cans into handmade, moving mosaics. Currently at the MVP stage, this project is driven by her commitment to reducing waste, advocating for the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" mantra, and creating jobs for millions of unemployed youth in Kenya. YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa has been transformative for her, helping where she gained a deeper understanding of herself. The program connected her with an incredible network of like-minded, intelligent fellows, all working towards a common goal. Through YALI, she has built friendships across different countries and learned valuable lessons about leadership, entrepreneurship, and the power of youth in transforming Africa. One session, in particular, “This is Africa, and Africa is our Business" opened her eyes to the immense opportunities our continent holds, instilling in me renewed hope and ambition for Africa's future. It resonated deeply with her vision of not just building a business but contributing to societal transformation and environmental advocacy. After YALI, she is developing her product, influencing society's perspective on waste while empowering youth through employment opportunities. She is excited to launch this product as she continues with her storytelling work through Jani Maps. She is proud to belong to this community and carry forward YALI’s mission of empowering young African leaders and entrepreneurs to create lasting change. #YALItransformation #YALIimpact #Cohort57 #MyDayInYALIRLCEA USAID Dow Kenyatta University YALI Network YALI RLC EA Alumni Ke Mastercard Foundation University of Iowa The University of Iowa Tippie College of Business Kenya Airways KCB Bank Group WYLDE International Next Step Foundation

5 Essential Takeaways Before you Create Your First Story Map! Creating the story of Tsavo East was a journey that opened my eyes and brought a new level of joy and fulfillment I never new existed! Here is what you need to know😉 1. Deep Dive into the Story: You will find yourself immersed in researching and crafting the story, often spending more time on this than the map itself. This depth is what makes the story resonate. 2. Patience is Key: Story maps take time - much more than expected. From inception to completion, it can stretch up to a month. My Tsavo East map took a full two weeks to perfect! 3. Collaborate: Dont hesitate to reach out to proffessionals outside cartograpgy, such as graphic designers. Their expertise can elevate your work significantly! 4. Go beyond the legend: Story maps offer space for supporting information, sometimes eliminating the need for a traditional legend. This allows the map to become a comprehensive and engaging narrative in itself. 5. Embrace the journey: Each step from research to design, is a learning experience that enhances your skills and broadens your horizons. If you love storytelling as much as I do, this might be your next great passion! TSAVO WEST COMING SOON!!! For custom mapping, map wall arts and cartographic services. What a better place to draw inspiration than from the lakeside region itself. In our most recent mapping project we decided to highlight the beauty of Lake Victoria's Bondo, Rarienda and Mbita districts, with a close eye on Rusinga Island. When we say "close" we mean it. Rusinga island is connected to Mbita by an access road whereas the most direct access point in South Uyoma (Luanda K'Otieno) for Bondo and Rarienda is merely 10km away via the Luanda - Mbita Ferry. A significant aspect is that the lake waters also serve as a border between Homabay and Siaya Counties with fish landing sites spread out along the coast line, enchanting the locals and stimulating economic growth. Cartographically this map was prepared to imitate an early 1990 antique map drawn on aged material. Do not forget the antique depicted LULC on the bottom left corner as well. Otherwise, enjoy the magical view!!
