  • The EPR Regulations, 2024: A Game Changer for the Built Environment The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Regulations, 2024 are now in effect, marking a pivotal shift in Kenya’s approach to sustainable waste management. Under the oversight of NEMA, these regulations hold producers, importers, and brand owners accountable for the full lifecycle of their products and packaging—from design to disposal. Why This Matters for the Built Environment (1) Sustainable Construction Materials – Producers of cement, steel, glass, plastics, and other building materials must now integrate recyclability and waste reduction into their processes. (2)Circular Economy in Action – The regulations encourage reuse, recycling, and responsible end-of-life disposal, pushing for innovation in green building materials. (3) Compliance & Accountability – Developers, manufacturers, and suppliers must register with NEMA, join a Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO), and submit regular reports to ensure compliance. (4) Opportunities for Green Innovation – The shift to eco-friendly materials, modular construction, and upcycled building components will not only meet compliance but also enhance sustainability and cost efficiency. If implemented correctly, these regulations set the stage for a cleaner, more responsible built environment. It’s time for industry players to take action, embrace EPR, and lead Kenya’s green transition!
