Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in an impactful event at Zimmerman, together with organisations as WingFarm, Bold Africa, and Thee Joint Youth Group. Together, we did some farming activity, planting, to support Brook Centre for the deaf and autistic children. This initiative not only promotes UrbanFarming as a sustainable solution but also ensures access to nutritious food for children with special needs. Such projects strengthen food security and demonstrate the power of agriculture in transforming lives within our communities. Urban farming is more than growing food; it's about creating healthier environments, empowering communities, and building a brighter future for vulnerable groups. Let’s continue to embrace these efforts to nurture a healthier, inclusive, and sustainable society! #UrbanFarming #Sustainability #CommunityImpact #Agriculture #Inclusion #wingfarm #boldimpactafrica #LoraineKabaka #foodsecurity #icipe

On Tuesday, our Head of Partnerships, Loraine Kabaka, initiated Project Shambani with a mission to leverage sustainable agricultural practices, and transform landfill urban spaces in Kenya into vibrant green areas, fostering biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem health. Through the project, we established a community garden at the 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝑪𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒇 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒏 in Zimmerman, that will be critical in fostering inclusion and empowering children with special needs with access to fresh foods. We also trained the participants on agroecology techniques, composting, and soil health, encouraging them to participate in sustainable farming. We are grateful to all our partners who collaborated in the success of the project, including WingFarm, SHOFCO, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). We also invite everyone interested to participate in the next edition that will be held in Githurai 44 on Saturday, December 14th, 2024.

We partnered with Thee Joint - a youth based organisation and other partners to establish a community garden at the Brook Centre for Deaf and Autistic Children. The community garden will allow access to highly nutritious food for the children which will promote better health outcomes and improved quality of life. Ensuring access to such food fosters inclusivity and equity, empowering these children to thrive and actively participate in society. WingFarm

On Tuesday, WingFarm, in collaboration with Loraine Kabaka and Thee Joint—a youth-based group —successfully established a community garden at the Brook Centre for Deaf and Autistic Children. This garden is more than just a space for growing food; it represents hope and transformation. By cultivating nutritious vegetables and fruits like tomatoes, onions, coriander, lettuce, avocados, tree tomatoes, passion fruits, pawpaws, and cowpeas using agroecological principles, we aim to enhance the nutritional intake and overall well-being of these special children. We were privileged to work alongside youth from informal settlements in Nairobi, Zimmerman, Kasarani, and Gathurai. This initiative not only empowered them with hands-on agricultural skills but also inspired them to view farming as a pathway to growth and community impact. At WingFarm, we are committed to creating a more sustainable and inclusive food system. Our goal is to establish 15 additional community gardens in Nairobi and Kiambu counties, providing safe and healthy food options to communities in the informal sector. Together, we are sowing seeds of change—one garden at a time. #Agroecology #KilimoniMboka #YouthEmpowerment #SustainableAgriculture Loraine Kabaka
