Provoking conversation on the gap in diagnostics in Africa. Beginning with a damning report by Nqobile Ndlovu MPH CEO Africa Society of Laboratory Medicines on the diagnostics gap: 😫 49% of the global population have no access to diagnostics; 😱 81% of population in LMIC have no access to diagnostics (ie only 2 in 10 people HAVE access). The consequences are people dying without ever being diagnosed, late diagnosis of illness, rapid spread of infectious diseases, anti-microbial resistance etc. Ending with Dr Allan Pamba VP Africa Roche Diagnostics sharing inspiration from the elimination of Hepatitis C in Egypt within a 10 year window is an example of the power of access to diagnostics. #IHMS

🔥🔥 Questions for African Health Ministers on the hot topic of local manufacturing of health products and technologies in Africa: 1️⃣ What should Africa manufacture as priority - vaccines? therapeutics? diagnostics? What would add greatest value from a health and development perspective? 2️⃣ What do we need to do from a procurement and regulatory perspective to ensure that Africa can purchase from ourselves? What about trust capital? 3️⃣ How do we build the capacity we need from discovery to market access for priority products? How do we incorporate our indigenous medicine knowledge? How do we optimize our human capital? 4️⃣ And importantly, who will invest in health R&D in Africa (HINT it needs to be us Africans) If we ask these questions to the youthful population of Africa, how would they answer? #IHMS

Your presence added so much value to the summit! Thank you for joining us, and we look forward to continuing this impactful mission together. ✨
Truth telling by Prof Sheila Dinotshe Tlou from Botswana Open University & former parliamentarian and Minister of Health Botswana. Botswana was the 1st country in Africa to achieve the 95-95-95 AIDS targets. She attributes this primarily to domestic resourcing and HER (not just her) leadership. Her assertions: Africa CAN invest in herself and her health if we: (i) apply the mineral wealth of the continent for the good of Africa; (ii) face and address corruption head on; (iii) harness the strength and thinking of the younger generation; and (iv) leverage HER (not just HIS) leadership. #IHMS

Thank you for being an essential part of this summit! It was a joy having you with us, and we’re excited to continue making an impact together!
Some interesting conversations at the International Health Ministers Summit: 🏡 Futurist, surgeon, Professor Shafi Ahmed sees a shift from the hospital to the house-pital. Where many more health care is provided in the home. 💙 Blue Zones - places in the world where people live to be 100 years now. None of these are in Africa (I wonder if this is because no one has looked or because there just aren’t there 🤔). Things in common within these known blue zones include community, communication, food/nutrition, work ethic, and walking. There is a Netflix documentary in this. 👾 Gamification as a way to reduce resistance, apathy, stigma etc. A shift from ‘you have not yet covered your 2000 steps’ to ‘you are 2nd on the walking leaderboard in your group’. Move from an almost accusation to a nudge. 🤷♀️ Can you digitize trust? Different perspectives here - AI in health, wearables and consumer products like smart watches / glasses etc that collects a lot of individual data… Feels like one way to understand this is to ask why some digital tools are trusted while others aren’t. #IHMS

Thank you for being an integral part of this summit! It was truly a pleasure having you with us. We look forward to continuing this impactful journey together and driving meaningful change!
Empowering Health Systems Across Africa: Collaboration, Innovation, and Action 🌍 I was honored to participate in the inaugural International Health Ministers Summit (IHMS) in Kigali, Rwanda, where thought leaders and stakeholders united to address some of Africa’s most pressing health challenges. This event highlighted critical themes, including health equity, vaccine manufacturing, women’s health, and digital innovation. The event brought together incredible thought leaders, including Dr Mazyanga Lucy MAZABA, Dr. Deborah Barasa, Dr Amit N. Thakker, Dr Kwasi Boahene, Hon. Minister Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, and Dr. Ibrahima Sy, who shared actionable insights on how Africa can build a sustainable health ecosystem. 💡 Few Takeaways: • Collaboration is the new innovation. Ideas must be implemented with diverse stakeholders, laying an African foundation. • Minister Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana’s “4x4” strategy (quadrupling healthcare workers in 4 years), decentralizing infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted supply chains, and embracing technology like AI to address gaps. • The Africa Medicines Agency, AMA’s vital role in harmonizing regulatory frameworks for swift investment and access across Africa, highlighted by Rhulani Nhlaniki. • Major General Dr. Bahaa El-Din Zidan emphasized leveraging Africa’s raw materials for medicine manufacturing, supported by data integration and AI-powered networks. • Strengthening diagnostics through partnerships and community engagement is essential to drive impactful R&D projects and successful vaccination programs. 🚀 Action Over Talk: As Jorge Levinson aptly put it, “How can we advance collaboration from talk to action?” Creating the right business and regulatory environment is critical for scaling up local production, ensuring affordable access to quality medicines, and positioning Africa as a global health leader. A special thank you to Tom Coleman, his team from Informa Markets, and host country Rwanda, for the invitation to be part of such transformative conversations. Your dedication to building a healthier, self-sufficient Africa is truly inspiring. Let us move from talk to transformative action, fostering innovation and partnerships for a sustainable future. #IHMS #HealthEquity #DigitalHealth #VaccineManufacturing
