Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation.

About us

MSF medical teams work in more than 70 countries to provide lifesaving assistance where it is needed the most. In 2019, 65,000 people worked with MSF in conflicts, epidemics, following natural disasters and where people would not otherwise have access to medical care. We work according to principles of independence, neutrality and impartiality; providing assistance to people who need it the most, regardless of who they are, where they come from, their political or religious beliefs. The organisation has some of its largest medical projects across East Africa including in Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia and Burundi. In these countries, MSF runs hospitals, health centres and mobile clinics and launches emergency projects as spikes in healthcare needs arise.

  • Survivors of sexual and gender-based violence in Haiti's capital urgently need vital services such as safe shelters, mental health support and medical care, as rapes and other assaults have become widespread during violence and insecurity in the city in recent years. MSF has provided comprehensive medical and psychological care to sexual and gender-based violence survivors through its Pran Men'm clinic in Port-au-Prince since 2015. After a citywide suspension of MSF's medical activities due to threats against staff and patients in November, the clinic reopened in December and is continuing to receive patients 24/7, free-of charge. To highlight the crisis of sexual violence in Haiti's capital, MSF partnered with an award-winning Haitian visual artist in the U.S., Lyne Lucien, to animate one survivor's difficult journey toward recovery. 🎥 Watch Jeanne’s story, brought to life with powerful illustrations by Lyne Lucien. • Following Cyclone Chido and the recent heavy rainfall in Mayotte, the challenges faced by the most vulnerable communities remain dire. Matthieu Chantrelle, Deputy Program Manager for MSF, highlights the grim reality: slum dwellers—many undocumented—are excluded from state aid, leaving them without food, clean water, or medical care. 🏘️ The Reality on the Ground: ❌ Over 100,000 people live in shantytowns, with homes destroyed and basic needs unmet. ❌ Food scarcity is rampant, with families forced to survive on a single meal a day. ❌ Medical needs are overwhelming, with MSF providing over 3,200 consultations in one month. We therefore call on the French authorities to respond to this blind spot in the response, and to promote aid activities as close as possible to all the people affected by the disaster in the archipelago. 📢 Read more about our response and the ongoing crisis: https://bit.ly/3Wnekpt #Mayotte #CycloneChido #HumanitarianResponse #Medicalcare #MSF

  • The announcement of a possible ceasefire, which has yet to be signed and implemented, is a vital respite, though it comes tragically late - after immense suffering and countless lives lost. While we are waiting for its implementation, we call for this fragile relief to be more than a pause; so that people can rebuild their lives, reclaim their dignity and to mourn for those killed and all that’s been lost. Israel's bombing needs to stop and a massive urgent scale-up of humanitarian aid is needed to meet the catastrophic humanitarian and medical needs of people. While the ceasefire must be respected and long-term, it is only the first step in addressing the overwhelming humanitarian, psychological, and medical needs in Gaza. We urge all parties to ensure humanitarian aid reaches people across the Strip now. #GAZA #Ceasefire #MSF #Medicalcare #Humanitarian

  • "My name is Solange Ahidjo, and I am a midwife at MSF's maternity unit in Aboutengue camp, Chad. This marks my first-year anniversary with MSF. I support women at every stage of their pregnancy, from before delivery to post-partum care, assisting those facing potential obstetric or gynecologic complications, and most importantly, being there during childbirth. In 2024 alone, we managed nearly 1000 births, witnessing approximately 30 births per week. Our team also provides antenatal and postnatal consultations, operates a mobile clinic, and supports survivors of sexual violence with essential medical care and psychosocial support. Women supporting women—this is how I feel it. The trust and bond we share with our patients are invaluable. As a woman who has given birth myself, I understand their pain—I know what they’re going through. I love my profession deeply and aim to continue practicing it every day for the rest of my life." • In December 2024, fighting between Congolese armed forces and the M23 armed group resumed in the Lubero territory in eastern DRC. Thousands of civilians are fleeing the clashes. According to UNOCHA, 290K people have been displaced in the Lubero region since December. The displaced families lack food, blankets, mattresses and access to water. With expensive and limited access to healthcare, some families in Lubero are turning to self-medication, which can lead to complications. MSF is working to facilitate access to health care. MSF is supporting the Ministry of Health to strengthen routine vaccination, aiming to prevent epidemics like measles that could affect the displaced population. Virginie Napolitano is the emergency project coordinator for MSF in Lubero. She talks about the context, the displacement of people and MSF’s activities: https://lnkd.in/drjfWFwT #Displaced #DRC #MSF #Medicalcare #HumanitarianAid

  • 🚨MSF strongly condemns the armed attack on two of its clearly marked boats on the afternoon of Wednesday, 15 January 2025 in Upper Nile State, South Sudan🇸🇸. The boats carrying six MSF staff members were sailing on the river back to Ulang after delivering essential medical supplies to Nasir County Hospital. This attack puts the safety of humanitarian workers at risk and disrupts the delivery of critical medical aid to those in need. Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the boats, forcing the MSF staff to jump into the river and swim to safety in a nearby village. One staff member sustained an injury while escaping the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment. While all staff have safely arrived in Ulang, this attack is a serious violation of humanitarian principles and international law. “Such attacks on healthcare workers are unacceptable and highlight the volatile environment in which humanitarian organisations operate in South Sudan,” says Zakaria Mwatia, MSF head of mission in South Sudan. “The people living in Nasir and Ulang counties already face limited access to healthcare and the impact of such violence further jeopardises the delivery of essential medical services, placing them at increased risk.” As a result of this attack, MSF has been forced to suspend all movements for outreach activities in Nasir and Ulang Counties. MSF calls for immediate measures to ensure the safety and protection of humanitarian workers and the unimpeded delivery of essential medical care to those in need. https://bit.ly/4amvk4E #SouthSudan #MSF #HumanitarianAid #MedicalCare

  • "My name is Rachida Mahamat. I am a Sudanese refugee in eastern Chad. Since the beginning of my pregnancy, I have been attending antenatal consultations with MSF team in Aboutengue camp. I visited the clinic five times and was given information about the progress of my pregnancy. I was also given cereals and oil to improve my health, as recommended by the midwife during the consultations. At my last appointment, the midwife told me that I was already nine months pregnant and advised me to go to the maternity ward if I felt any pain. In the late hours of the 1st of January, I began to feel abdominal pain. When I arrived at the maternity ward, a midwife examined me and told me that I would be giving birth in a few hours. Although I was in pain from the contractions, I received constant support throughout this difficult time. At around 1:00 am on 2nd of January, I gave birth to a baby boy. The midwives told me that I was the first woman to give birth there in 2025 and that my baby was the first newborn of the year in MSF maternity ward in the camp. I am happy and I thank MSF team for taking such good care of me and my baby.” "Delivering hope, one baby at a time" – A midwife’s voice from a refugee camp in eastern Chad. • Fragile boats carrying Rohingya refugees—mostly women and children—were found at sea last week. Having spent more than a week at the open sea, some were found in an extreme state of exhaustion, having had no food or water, for days. The practice of turning back boats or pushing back from one country to another without proper safeguards grossly undermines their fundamental right of seeking refuge – this must be respected and protected. States in the region need to uphold their international commitments and work collaboratively to ensure the safety, protection, dignity, and well-being of all refugees and stateless individuals. No one should need to embark on such treacherous journeys in search of safety. These journeys expose people to perilous conditions, including the lack of food, water, and medical care, leaving many physically and mentally scarred—that is, if they survive at all. According to the United Nations, over 650 people who undertook these perilous boat journeys have been reported dead or missing. #Rohingya #Refugees #MSF #HumanitarianAid

  • On 8 January, 3 children from Gaza with severe injuries caused by Israeli airstrikes arrived at the MSF hospital in Jordan after months of delays and rejections by the Israeli authorities. Meanwhile, 2 other patients have still been denied medical evacuation from Gaza with no clear explanation. “It has taken 3 months to evacuate 3 children in need of medical care. The recovery of injured children in Gaza depends on them getting timely care – these delays can lead to life-long disabilities and even death from infections," says Moeen Mahmood, MSF country director in Jordan. Last November, Israeli authorities also blocked the medical evacuation of 8 children and their caretakers from Gaza who needed medical care, including a two-year-old with leg amputations, to the MSF hospital in Jordan. The healthcare system in Gaza has been systematically dismantled by Israeli forces. Patients in need of specialised medical care have nowhere to go. According to WHO, there are at least 12,000 people still in need of medical evacuation from Gaza. Since 7 October 2023, we have only been able to evacuate 13 children from Gaza to our hospital in Jordan. We call on the Israeli authorities to ensure medical evacuations for all Palestinians in need of care now, including their caregivers, while guaranteeing their safe, voluntary and dignified return to Gaza. #Gaza #MSF #Medicalcare #HumanitarianAid
