I'm thrilled to announce that I've finished the “Making Market Systems Work" course in #Bangkok #Thailand. It was a fantastic 2 Weeks training experience that offered real-world case studies, useful information diagnostic skills that could be put into practice, and perspectives from knowledgeable instructors from The Springfield Centre. My comprehension of the Market Systems Development (MSD) methodology and how to design long-lasting and significant market systems has improved as a result of the training. The training offered a great chance to network with more than 50 #MSD practitioners from all over the world exchanging best practices and perspectives. Looking forward to using these new insights in my work in #Agriculture, #Renewable Energy and #WASH to help bring about impactful change to communities and to create resilient livelihoods and thriving inclusive societies. #16DaysOfActivism: Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a grim reality for many women in Kenya. Through training, mentorship, public education, and facilitating income-generating opportunities for women, our programmes aim to reduce the risks and prevalence of GBV while addressing gender inequality. This week, we supported Baringo, Bomet, Narok, and Kericho Counties to organize #16DaysOfActivism events. Featuring walks, speeches and other activities, the events aim to raise awareness, and inspire change against GBV. In these counties, Practical Action in Kenya is promoting clean cooking solutions by partnering with last-mile entrepreneurs, most of whom are women, the county governments and other players. This work is made possible through the support of Energising Development (EnDev), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, and the Green Climate Fund. #CitiesFitForPeople: Earlier this week, we had the pleasure of hosting Marianne Toftgaard and Lars Christian from the Danida Green Business Partnerships / Danida Market Development Partnerships (DGBP). The team got a first-hand experience of the progress of the "Circular Economy for Household Organic Waste (CE4HOW) Project" in Kakamega. DGBP is supporting the initiative that's implemented by Practical Action in Kenya in partnership with Regen Organics and the County Government of Kakamega. On Monday, Marianne and Lars had wide-ranging discussions with key personnel of the project implementing partners in Nairobi, including our Country Director Susan Maina. On Tuesday, they were in Kakamega where they met informal waste handlers, county government officials and households adopting sustainable practices like waste segregation at source. They also visited Regen Organics upcoming waste recycling plant in Matawa that will incorporate organic waste from 15,000 households. CE4HOW aims to create a viable business model for household organic waste that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improves waste services, and transforms the lives of informal waste workers. #CitiesFitForPeople: A waste-transformational project is taking place with Riviera Travel. It is working with over 2,000 households and 100 waste workers in Kisumu, Kenya’s third-largest city. Together, we are cleaning rivers and other waste hotspots to foster a cleaner environment and improve lives. Starting in Dec 2023, Riviera Travel has donated £1 to Practical Action for every passenger that books a holiday with them. Here’s the exciting part! #EnergyThatTransforms: Improved Cookstoves (ICS) use up to 40% less charcoal or firewood than the traditional three-stone open-fire cooking common in Kenya. They have a significant potential to reduce fuel costs, environmental degradation, air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. However, poor quality ICS and lack of quality standardization undermine the transition to efficient biomass cookstoves. To address this, we recently facilitated a cookstove quality training for Last Mile Entrepreneurs (LMEs) at the Strathmore Energy Research Centre. The training focused on the relevance of testing, test protocols, the importance of standardization and voluntary labelling standards. Following the training, the LMEs are expected to produce and sell high-quality ICS. The entrepreneurs were drawn from Nakuru, Nyandarua, Bomet, Kericho and Baringo Counties. Thank you to the experts from Strathmore, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), the Clean Cooking Association of Kenya (CCAK) and others who conducted this vital training. #ResilienceThatProtects: Climate change is intensifying droughts and water stress in Kenya's Turkana County. The good news is that in Kalokol, communities are now receiving clean and reliable water for themselves and their livestock. We've completed drilling and equipping another borehole with a solar-powered pump. We've also done pipeline extensions, an overhead tank, water kiosks, and animal troughs. To ensure sustainability, local residents are trained to maintain the infrastructure and provide water at affordable fees. Photos in the comments section.
