Air Asia’s entry into Kenya has been a long-awaited development. The fact AirAsia has chosen Nairobi as their first destination in Africa, speaks of Magical Kenya's potential not just as a safari destination, but also a business and investment hub.

This morning, I convened the second quarter development partners meeting to strengthen our shared commitment to Kenya’s wildlife conservation. We discussed priorities aligned with the Strategic Plan 2023–2027, including ecosystem restoration, human-wildlife conflict mitigation and climate resilience. There is need to re-tool wildlife conservation in order to better respond to contemporary issues. Moving forward, we aim to finalize key policies, expand partnerships, and embrace innovative financing and technology. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities and secure Kenya’s wildlife heritage for future generations. My heartfelt gratitude to all our partners.

It’s been an incredible journey working with you, Amb. Meg Whitman. Your passion and unwavering belief in Kenya have made a real impact. You championed Kenya globally with bold vision and deep respect for our potential, and for that, we are grateful. I admire your clear philosophy—that “a short no is better than a long no”—which highlighted the value of timely, decisive action. Your support strengthened our partnership and paved the way for progress, especially in tourism. I wish you every success in your next chapter.

Following a pivotal meeting with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, the U.S. Embassy, USAID, and key partners, I am pleased to share updates on the Kenya Rhino Range Expansion (KRRE) initiative and the South of Kenya (SOK) programme. This transformative project represents one of the world’s largest projects aimed at expanding rhino ranges and habitats, addressing challenges such as overpopulation and territorial conflicts, and safeguarding the future of this critically endangered species. In collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and partners, we are advancing habitat restoration and expansion, particularly in Tsavo and Central Kenya, as part of the Rhino Recovery Plan. These efforts aim to open critical corridors for wildlife movement, with a focus on the Black Rhino, while enhancing the capacity for sustainable habitat management. Beyond conservation, KRRE is a game-changer for local communities, delivering socio-economic benefits, boosting tourism and preserving Kenya’s biodiversity. Together, we are paving the way for a future where people and wildlife coexist in harmony.

Today, I signed the second-generation Ministerial Performance Contract for the Financial Year 2024/2025 with H.E. President William Ruto. These contracts are more than commitments, they are a solemn pledge to serve Kenyans with dedication and deliver on the transformative Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda. As a steward of the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, I am deeply committed to: 1️⃣ Increasing tourist arrivals and earnings. 2️⃣ Diversifying tourism products to enhance visitor experience. 3️⃣ Strengthening governance and financial sustainability. 4️⃣ Promoting conservation education and active community participation. 5️⃣ Advancing human-wildlife co-existence. 6️⃣ Promoting domestic tourism and 7️⃣ Creating an enabling environment for sustainable tourism and conservation.

𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐄 Kenya’s natural wealth is a cornerstone of our national pride and a key pillar of our tourism industry. Today, I officially launched the 2024-2025 second phase of the National Wildlife Census led by WRTI from Shaba National Reserve, the operational base for this important exercise. It is the right of every Kenyan to know our wildlife numbers and understand what this data means for our communities, conservation efforts, and economic future. By gathering precise, scientific data, we can craft better policies, protect our natural heritage, and ensure that Kenya remains a top global destination for generations to come. At the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, communities are at the heart of everything we do. The second phase of the Wildlife Census will cover 65,000 square kilometers, focusing on the Northern Landscape, the largest ecosystem outside protected areas, spanning 6 counties where wildlife and communities coexist. By collecting accurate data on population trends and habitat health, we can identify threats and craft targeted, community-focused conservation strategies to protect our wildlife and ecosystems for future generations. I’m pleased to share that 98% of the recommendations from Phase 1 of the National Wildlife Census have been implemented. Despite the 2022 drought, preliminary results show stable wildlife populations, testament to our shared conservation efforts. As we launch Phase II, I sincerely thank our partners and call on all stakeholders to support this vital exercise. This census marks a key step in our conservation journey, prioritizing data-driven decisions and reaffirming our dedication to protecting the unique species and habitats that make #MagicalKenya a global treasure.

I am delighted to welcome the inaugural Air Asia direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Nairobi and to receive 377 passengers and crew on board this historic flight! Effectively, this marks the beginning of a new chapter in Kenya’s tourism and aviation experience. Air Asia’s entry into Kenya has been a long-awaited development. The fact AirAsia has chosen Nairobi as their first destination in Africa, speaks of Magical Kenya's potential not just as a safari destination, but also a business and investment hub.

Kenya places immense value on its strong and enduring ties with Belgium, a relationship that has flourished for over six decades based on mutual respect and shared aspirations. It is a great honour to grace Belgium’s King’s Day celebration in Kenya this evening. Our two countries’ partnership continues to thrive, spanning tourism, trade, renewable energy, communication technology, and peace and security, reflecting our common values and vision for progress. I am pleased to note the return of direct flights between Brussels and Nairobi by Brussels Airlines this June. This direct link has already increased travel between our two nations, opening up greater opportunities for tourism, cultural exchange, and business. We look forward to welcoming more visitors from Belgium to experience the wonders of #MagicalKenya. On behalf of His Excellency President William Ruto and the Government of Kenya, I reiterate our commitment to deepening the bonds of friendship with the Kingdom of Belgium. We look forward to expanding our collaboration across various sectors, especially in tourism for the benefit of our peoples.
