Solidarity Initiative for Refugees was honored to participate in the ILO PROSPECTS 𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗿-𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 in Naivasha, Kenya, from December 3 to 5th. This groundbreaking event brought together changemakers from trade unions, worker organizations, digital skills trainers, and advocates to address critical issues in the platform economy. As digital platforms redefine work in Kenya, millions of gig workers, including refugees face challenges like job insecurity, lack of social protections, and unclear employment classifications. Together, we explored strategies to empower platform workers, including: • Advocating for fair wages and social protections • Training peer educators to cascade knowledge within their networks • Discussing innovative pathways like unions, cooperatives, and digital advocacy 📚 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: The workshop spotlighted practical solutions to create a fairer platform economy. From the importance of 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to emerging global practices like platform co-ops, every session strengthened our commitment to promoting 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹. Let’s create a future where platform work is inclusive, equitable, and sustainable. 𝗣𝗦: How do you think we can better protect gig workers in the digital economy? Solidarity Initiative for Refugees (SIR) was honored to attend the Charter for Change (C4C) Annual Dialogue on November 13–14, courtesy of our valued partner, Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp . Together with humanitarian champions, including DRC colleagues, sustainability model partners, and other key players, we engaged in transformative discussions on advancing the Localization Agenda. These dialogues emphasized the critical role of local organizations and leaders in driving meaningful, community-led humanitarian responses. Key Takeaways: 💡 "Shifting the power" requires strengthening capacity, fostering trust, and investing in local leadership. 💡 Collaboration, not competition, is key to sustainable impact. 💡 Kenya’s spirit of Ubuntu leads the way in global giving—local action makes global waves! #LocalizationAgenda #CharterForChange #SolidarityForImpact #ShiftingThePower #UbuntuInAction #DRC #SIR

On October 31st, eight bright young people in Kakuma participated in the StarPath career orientation workshop - a one-day experience organised in partnership by Solidarity Initiative for Refugees, Loughborough University London and Bournemouth University. We had with us Amalia Sabiescu and Isabella Rega, who co-facilitated the workshop with SIR’s Vestine Leila Ihimbazwe, guiding young people to use the StarPath toolkit in a journey of reflection on their life aspirations, professional goals and the knowledge and skills they should equip themselves with to break limitations and achieve their full potential. Huge thanks to Loughborough University London’s Amalia Sabiescu, Jo Tacchi and Noémi Zajzon and Bournemouth University’s Isabella Rega and the project funders - Loughborough University’s Accelerator Funding and The Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF). Watch this space as we continue to collaborate in further shaping the StarPath toolkit and use it to create spaces of reflection and sharing for personal and professional achievement for our young people in Kakuma! #WithRefugees #RefugeeEducation #Kakuma

Proud to be part of the journey toward sustainability and self-reliance for our communities! our team just wrapped up a transformative 3-day review & learning workshop in Nanyuki with Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp and other dedicated local partners under the Danida-supported Sustainability Model Program. As the only Refugee-led organization among the partners, our team brought unique insights into the resilience, challenges, and aspirations of refugee communities. Together, we reflected on our progress, sharpened our outcome reporting, and strengthened plans for responsible transitions, ensuring that our work remains impactful and community-driven. At SIR, we are committed to empowering refugee and host communities through education, livelihoods and advocacy programs. Thank you, Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp, for leading this essential work on #Localisation and sustainable development. Let’s keep pushing boundaries and strengthening capacities that will create lasting change. #Localisation #CommunityImpact
