Technology and community knowledge are coming together, thanks to a UNEP-supported initiative, to fill the early warning data gap when it comes to protecting people on the young island-nation of Timor-Leste, which is particularly vulnerable to the ravages of the #ClimateCrisis. In April 2021, catastrophic flash floods ravaged Timor-Leste, claiming the lives of more than 30 people and destroying over 4,000 homes. As leaders convened for November’s #COP29, climate justice took centre stage, with a stark reminder that countries most vulnerable to natural disasters too often lack the resources to shield themselves. https://lnkd.in/djAEdvTz

At least 50% of the planet’s population—4 billion people—face water shortages for at least one month a year. More than 2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water, and by 2025, 1.8 billion people could face “absolute water scarcity.” Water is also the face of climate impacts: over 90% of disasters—including drought, desertification, fires, and floods—are water-related. As the climate crisis intensifies, and it is intensifying, things will only get worse. The Baku Dialogue on Water for Climate Action was launched at #COP29 to tackle water challenges and integrate water into climate strategies. Here’s why it matters: https://lnkd.in/gdd6PDKU
