In October 2024, the Directorate of Innovations and Practice conducted a #learnerassessment on addition and subtraction tasks across five schools in #Bungoma West Sub-County. 405 learners participated in the #assessment, comprising 219 girls (54%) and 186 boys (46%). The learners were drawn from Grades 3 and 2, with 211 (52%) and 194 (48%) learners assessed, respectively. The results revealed that only 3% of the learners could solve all addition and subtraction tasks correctly, showcasing weak #foundationalskills and computing abilities. To address common challenges identified in the assessment, Zizi Afrique Foundation, in partnership with the Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in Africa (#CEMASTEA), organized a three-day Error-Analysis Co-CreationWorkshop. The workshop brought together teachers from the five schools, curriculum support officers, and other #educationalleaders from the Sub-county to analyze the errors made by #learners when solving addition and subtraction problems and collaboratively develop practical strategies. Listen in to gain deeper insights into error analysis and its potential to improve learning outcomes. Zizi Afrique Foundation together with #CEMASTEA and Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) representatives, had a fruitful session with the senior leadership of the Western Cape Provincial Education Department in South Africa as part of a learning immersion initiative. Through our collaboration with the Directorate of Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Funda Wande, we are gaining valuable insights to enhance #FoundationalLiteracy and #Numeracy (FLN) outcomes. Key takeaways include building strong government partnerships, prioritizing #pedagogy, ensuring long-term impact, scaling interventions effectively, customizing #learning resources, and fostering government ownership for sustainability. These lessons will help shape our strategies for improving #FLNoutcomes. James Mburu VIRGINIA NGINDIRU Vollan Ochieng, MA #Education #FLN #LearningExchange

Last week, we participated in a stakeholders’ meeting on Foundational Numeracy in Kenya, convened by Zizi Afrique Foundation in collaboration with Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in Africa (#CEMASTEA). The forum explored common errors in early-grade numeracy and key recommendations, including: ✅ Strengthening teacher training ✅ Implementing structured strategies to close learning gaps ✅ Embedding error analysis in lesson planning Notably, Benjamin Piper from The Gates Foundation emphasized that best practices from the recently released #ASER 2024 by ASER Centre should be adopted by Kenyan government representatives as a benchmark—proving that scaling interventions can drive positive improvements in foundational learning. #FoundationalNumeracy #EducationForAll #ScalingImpact Usawa Agenda, John Mugo, Emmanuel Manyasa, VIRGINIA NGINDIRU, Sara Ruto, Maurice Mutisya
