Numeracy concepts are part of our daily life, children and adults alike, from estimating time, distance, quantities and organizing personal schedules. However, most of this background knowledge in numeracy is not always fully utilised when learners get into school. In a recent numeracy assessment in Bungoma County, targeting learners in Grades 2 and 3, we established that, i) over 80% of learners are struggling with basic concepts such as place value, which limits their performance in operations, especially operations that involve regrouping ii) over 60% of these learners used tally marks to solve 2-digit math tasks affecting not only speed but also the accuracy with which they performed the tasks. iii) about 45% of learners assessed could not correctly solve simple addition/subtraction tasks (without regrouping), either because they could not accurately interpret the signs, digits. In this work, Zizi Afrique Foundation and #CEMASTEA, are working with early grade numeracy teachers to reflect on the common errors. Together, we will develop strategies for classroom use, pilot and test the efficacy of these in improving the numeracy outcomes of learners. The primary objective of this work is to ensure teachers adopt reflective practices around error analysis, and apply insights to inform instruction and lesson delivery. Critical in this journey is to enhance pedagogical practices in numeracy in early grade numeracy classrooms in Kenya. DAY 5: Gender-Based Violence (GBV) thrives in silence and stigma, often blaming survivors instead of supporting them. It's time to break the cycle, amplify their voices, and foster a society that stands with survivors on their journey to healing. #EndstigmaagainstGBVsurvivors #16daysofactivismagainstGBV #genderandeducationdialogues #gendereducationmovement

DAY 4: Violence leaves scars beyond what we see. 1 in 5 young women experience sexual violence, and physical fights remain far too common. It's time for collective action and self-protection. Together, we can end violence against our youth. #16daysofactivism #NGEC #genderandeducationdialogues #gendereducationmovement #endviolanceagainsttheyouth

DAY 3: Violence against women and girls in sports is rooted in power imbalances, harmful stereotypes, and a male-dominated culture. It's time to challenge the 'no pain, no gain' mentality and push for safe, inclusive environments where everyone can thrive. #EndViolenceInSports #GenderEquality #16daysofactivism #NGEC #genderandeducationdialogues #gendereducationmovement

A collaborative report by Research for Equitable Access and Learning (REAL) Centre and ESSA, highlights the progress and gaps in Early Childhood Development (ECD) research across Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from 2010-2022. Led by Eunice M. Williams, Ph.D, the report reveals that across all four countries, women are underrepresented in research outputs, especially in international journals. The report underscores the need for increased funding, particularly for under-researched ECD components like play and responsive caregiving. It calls for greater collaboration among African researchers and more opportunities for women and early career researchers to publish in international journals.
