🌏Akio Mimura, chairman of the Population Strategy Council and honorary chairman of Nippon Steel Corporation, recently addressed at the Asian Leadership Conference about the alarming decline in birth rates in both Korea and Japan. Mimura warned that if current trends continue, these nations risk becoming insignificant on the global stage, with many local governments potentially disappearing. He emphasized that the current measures being implemented in both countries are insufficient, as they fail to address deeper, root issues. Given their similar challenges and goals, Mimura suggested that Korea and Japan should collaborate to tackle this pressing issue collectively. One significant problem, he noted, is that individuals often do not perceive the declining birth rate as an urgent personal issue, despite its profound implications for society and the nation. Mimura criticized existing committees, including the Population Strategy Council, for lacking a collective sense of urgency and for not adequately considering the perspectives of the younger generation, who are crucial to reversing the trend. A key issue Mimura highlighted is the disproportionate burden of childrearing placed on women, with men's participation in childcare as ineffective. He called for a collective effort by both public and private sectors to promote greater male involvement in childrearing. By doing so, and by fostering a cooperative sense of urgency, Mimura believes it is possible to address and mitigate the declining birth rates in Korea and Japan. ❤️Yuko Yamaguchi, the third character designer at Sanrio Tokyo, was interviewed last May at ALC. In her interview, Yamaguchi touched on the history of the Hello Kitty logo and why it has gained such importance globally and among Hello Kitty’s devoted fanbase. Starting with the original Hello Kitty logo, Kitty was intended to appeal to a younger fanbase and be distributed through merchandising. However, when Yamaguchi took on the role of head designer, she steered Hello Kitty in a new direction, focusing on the opinions and wishes of the fans through fan events. She created different Hello Kitty designs that appealed to high schoolers and adults, and expanded the Hello Kitty world by introducing other characters. In her own journey to becoming a successful character designer, Yamaguchi stressed the importance of not only artistic abilities but also storytelling. Above all, she emphasized the significance of children in sustaining a character design, as successful designs stay with children as they grow.
