    𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐋𝐍𝐆 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐥𝐢𝐩 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 Last week, I had the privilege of presenting at the '𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞' in Changwon, sharing my expertise into the topic of maritime decarbonisation: 𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥. What I tried to explain was how lessons learned from 𝐋𝐍𝐆 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, particularly 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐩, are shaping the way we approach ammonia. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗹𝗶𝗽 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 One challenge with LNG is methane slip, especially during low or transient engine loads on 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫-𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐮𝐦-𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥-𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 (typical gensets). 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐆𝐖𝐏 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐎𝟐, making it critical to minimize. Here’s where things get tricky: many believe reducing engine load lowers methane slip. In reality, 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝟕𝟎–𝟖𝟓% 𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝. At lower loads, or transient loads, methane slip is way higher! (factor 3-5 in many cases) This is where 𝗘𝗥-𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 makes a difference: ▪️ By optimizing auxiliary systems (cooling water, HVAC, lubricating oil, regasification), we reduce energy demands. ▪️ Less demand allows to shut off low-load engines entirely—dramatically cutting methane slip. ▪️ Implementing hybrid solutions for peak shaving and minimising transient load conditions, keeping methane slip to its minimum. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 Auxiliary systems are often 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 in design, some due to Class rules, others simply from habit. Through better system sizing and smarter designs, 𝐄𝐑-𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 helps clients achieve: ✅ 𝐔𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝟑𝟎% 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 in newbuildings. ✅ Smarter pumps, pipework, and HVAC systems tailored to real operating conditions—not paper specs. ✅ Gensets tuned for the loads they actually see, improving emissions and efficiency. Our approach? We bring decades of experience from both operations and projects to bridge the gap between theory and real-world performance. 💡 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮? The shift to ammonia isn’t without its own challenges. While it’s promoted as CO2-free, practical use requires pilot fuels, and 𝐍𝟐𝐎 𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐩 (from ammonia combustion) 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐖𝐏 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐞.
