  • From November 25 to December 10, the world unites to stand against gender-based violence. This global campaign is a powerful reminder that violence against women and marginalized groups remains one of the most pressing issues of our time. This year, we are sharing quotes and insights from the «Voice of Feminism» (2020) project. This collection brings together the voices of feminist organizations, movements, and activists from Central Asia, highlighting their goals, values, and visions for a future free from violence and discrimination. 📌The goal of this project is to create a positive perception of feminism in society and promote its ideas in public spaces. By amplifying these voices, we emphasize feminism as a movement that defends women’s rights, transforms societal norms, and fosters equality. 🧡 Join the global movement. Speak out for equality and against violence. Together, we can build a just and respectful world. 📖 Read «Voice of Feminism» (in Russian): https://lnkd.in/eVZeCWuX

  • Every year, from November 25 to December 10, the international campaign «16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence» takes center stage. This global initiative aims to spotlight the pervasive issue of violence against women and girls and seeks actionable solutions to eliminate it. The latest Gender Snapshot by UN Women unveils alarming figures: 🔺1 in 8 women and girls aged 15 to 49 experienced intimate partner violence in the past year. 🔺At the current rate, girls will continue to be married as children until 2092. 🔺None of the 120 countries with data have all the necessary laws to prohibit discrimination, prevent violence, ensure equal rights in marriage and divorce, guarantee equal pay, and provide full access to sexual and reproductive health. Gender-based violence remains a critical issue in Central Asia. Addressing it requires more than awareness; it demands collective action to prevent violence and safeguard those at risk. Join the campaign, amplify the message, and take part in initiatives. Together, we can drive change and build a safer future. #16Days #NoExcuse #EndViolence

  • After the collapse of the USSR, Kazakhstan embarked on economic reforms emphasizing GDP growth and the creation of a middle class. However, despite a tenfold increase in GDP, inequality has intensified: the wealthiest 10% of citizens now own over 60% of the nation's wealth. The adoption of a Western capitalist system did not enable Kazakhstan to develop a broad-based middle class, leading to protests and heightened social stratification. Even changes in government regimes have failed to resolve the issue of inequality. ❓ What has led Kazakhstan into this critical impasse, and what changes could ensure prosperity for all? • 🇺🇿 In 2023, Uzbekistan introduced the concept of a "social state” into its Constitution. However, questions remain regarding what this term truly entails and how it will be implemented in a nation balancing socialism, capitalism, and traditional Islam. While the Uzbek government promotes this idea as a foundation for reforms, the reality is complex and often unclear. 🔸Increased Social Inequality: According to the World Bank, inequality has significantly widened, with the richest 10% of the population seeing a 30% rise in income, while the poorest have experienced only a 6% increase. Despite government pledges to improve social welfare, the benefits have largely favored the affluent. 🔸Power Centralization: The idea of a social state has become closely associated with the presidency, shifting the focus from societal welfare to reinforcing governmental authority. This centralization limits public participation and positions citizens as passive recipients of state-provided benefits. 🔸Control Through Social Initiatives: Programs like the “mahalla seven” show how social care is often employed as a mechanism for control. While these local committees are meant to support low-income families, they also act as state surveillance tools, reinforcing governmental power at the grassroots level. While Uzbekistan’s social state concept promises significant change, the reality is more complex, with entrenched power structures and mixed ideologies clouding its path. Will these reforms lead to meaningful improvement, or are they merely a tool to maintain the status quo? My latest analytical piece on the transformation of social welfare in Central Asia, published by the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung, is out! It dives into how Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are adopting workfare measures in their unemployment and poverty-reduction policies, focusing on individual responsibility, work activation, and the use of social contracts with benefit recipients. This shift raises important questions about social justice, poverty alleviation, and the future of welfare in these countries. A big thanks to Sergey Marinin for the support throughout the writing process and to Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Representative Office in Central Asia for the opportunity! https://lnkd.in/dUUZtqpS
