The ACERWC and #UNICEF Organized a Parallel Session on Children with Disabilities in humanitarian crisis during the 12th African Humanitarian Symposium on ‘Safeguarding the Future- Addressing the plight of children and adolescents affected by humanitarian crises’. The Session highlighted the challenges children with disabilities face due to destruction of infrastructure, loss of assistive devices, lack of data, exclusion from evacuation plans and information which lead to heightened risk of separation from care givers, sexual violence, abuse and neglect, killing and maiming, among others. Moreover, it was highlighted that evacuation shelters, IDP and Refugee Camps do not cater for the needs of children with disabilities as they lack accessibility of latrines, food and water, basic health services, and education. Humanitarian support is often distributed in places not accessible for children with disabilities which makes their survival at risk especially when separated from their caregivers. Recommendations for Member States and other stakeholders were raised including: ▪️Upholding the principle of non-discrimination in humanitarian responses and integrate inclusive approach in needs assessment and provision of humanitarian responses, ▪️Provide accessible humanitarian response and information by ensuring that the provision of evacuation, humanitarian services such as food, shelter, latrines, health, and education services, ▪️Ensure sufficient funding by all actors to ensure inclusion and that no child is left behind by giving due regard to all kinds of disabilities that children live with such as physical, sensory, behavioral and intellectual disability, ▪️Investigate and prosecute perpetrators of violence against children with disabilities in humanitarian setting, ▪️Engage children with disabilities in humanitarian situations and integrate their views in decision making, ▪️Build resilient and inclusive child protection system that can provide data and information on children with disabilities. #AfricanHumanitarianSymposium #AfricaFit4Children
