Bursting with familiar faces from cartoons, the deep sea and comic strips, this quirky and thought-provoking show features Daffy Duck, Bambi and an eclectic cast of animals like sharks, pigs, rabbits and whales. Cosima von Bonin offers a brilliant satire on pop culture and mass consumption, delivering a sharp, humorous critique of power, luxury and society’s obsession with consumerism. ‘I would rather be a cyborg than a goddess,’ wrote Donna Haraway in her groundbreaking essay ‘A Cyborg Manifesto’ (1985). Haraway reimagined the cyborg as a powerful symbol – an identity beyond the confines of gender, challenging the rigid dualisms that have shaped our understanding of bodies and technology. This hybrid of machine and organism continues to inspire generations of artists, including pioneering figures like VALIE EXPORT. In her 1989 digital self-portraits ‘Stand Up. Sit Down’ and ‘Selbstportrait mit Stiege und Hochhaus’, EXPORT overlays elements of urban architecture onto her face, symbolising the pressures of technological advancement and the fragmentation of identity in a post-Fordist society. Delve into VALIE EXPORT’s work in our exhibition ‘Radical Software: Women, Art & Computing 1960–1991’, a deep dive into the rich history of digital art from a feminist perspective.
