Waterproofing failures are costly — but avoidable. Electronic Leak Detection (ELD) has revolutionized Quality Control in waterproofing, but its precision depends on one critical component: conductivity. If the surface directly under the waterproofing layer(s) is not conductive enough, ELD efficiency is greatly reduced. But with Controlit conductive underlays, Electronic Leak Detection (ELD) becomes faster, more precise, and more repeatable, making quality control more reliable than ever. Why Conductive Underlays Are Essential for Quality Control: ⚡ Seamless ELD Integration Conductive underlays make Electronic Leak Detection possible on non-conductive substrates like insulation or timber decks, ensuring consistent testing across all roof types. It is also compatible with all waterproofing technologies. ⚡Immediate Defect Detection During installation, ELD paired with conductive underlays helps identify breaches in waterproofing membranes before project handover, ensuring the roof is leak-free from day one. ⚡Repeatable Testing Once installed, conductive underlays enable ongoing ELD inspections, allowing you to monitor the roof’s performance throughout its lifecycle. ⚡Proactive Risk Management By integrating conductive underlays into your design, you can proactively prevent warranty disputes, rework, and expensive repairs caused by undetected leaks. Prevention is better than cure. Controlit underlays make it easier to proactively detect and address vulnerabilities, extending the life of your waterproofing system. From Flood Testing to ELD: Smarter Leak Prevention and Integrity Testing Still using water to test your waterproofing? It’s time to upgrade. Traditional methods like flood testing are outdated and impractical for modern construction. Today’s best practices focus on preventing leaks and ensuring membrane integrity through Integrity Testing with Electronic Leak Detection (ELD). Why Flood Testing Falls Short ● Imprecise: doesn't pinpoint the source of the leak. ● Risky: Adds water weight and risks introducing water into the structure if it fails. ● Wasteful: Consumes thousands of liters of water for every test. Why ELD is the Smart Choice ● Proactive Leak Prevention: Detects potential breaches before leaks occur. ● Accurate Integrity Testing: Pinpoints even the smallest damages in waterproofing membranes. ● Non-invasive: Safeguards your structure while delivering precise results. Eco-friendly: Eliminates water waste, supporting sustainability goals. The Role of Conductive Underlays Conductive underlays make ELD possible on all substrates, including non-conductive materials like insulation foam and timber decks. They enable reliable, repeatable testing during both installation and preventive maintenance, ensuring long-term performance. Stop waiting for leaks to happen—start preventing them. Integrate ELD testing with conductive underlays for smarter, safer construction. Build Smart – Use Controlit 👷 #LeakPrevention #IntegrityTesting #Waterproofing #SustainableConstruction

5 Game-Changing Advantages of Conductive Underlays for ELD When it comes to ensuring waterproofing integrity, Electronic Leak Detection (ELD) paired with conductive underlays is the gold standard. Why? Because conductive underlays maximize the accuracy and effectiveness of ELD, making it the most reliable method for detecting breaches in membranes. Here are the top 5 advantages: 1️⃣ Precision Testing Every Time Conductive underlays ensure ELD can pinpoint even the smallest breaches by providing a consistent return path for electrical currents. This guarantees 100% accuracy, even on complex roof systems. 2️⃣ Compatible with All Substrates From non-conductive materials like timber or foam insulation to traditional substrates, conductive underlays enable ELD across any roofing system. Without them, testing is ineffective on non-conductive bases. 3️⃣ Proactive Maintenance Made Easy Conductive underlays allow you to test the membrane throughout the building’s lifecycle. This means early detection of potential issues, preventing leaks before they happen and reducing maintenance costs over time. 4️⃣ Non-Destructive & Sustainable Forget flood testing. Conductive underlays enable non-invasive inspections that are faster, safer, and better for the environment. Say goodbye to water waste and structural risks from traditional methods. 5️⃣ Versatile Across Applications Whether it’s flat roofs, green roofs, podium decks, balconies, or swimming pools, conductive underlays are your solution. They adapt to any waterproofing challenge, ensuring durability and performance. By integrating conductive underlays, you’re not just building better roofs—you’re future-proofing your projects. Great Project in Spain with SELDX Solutions for Electronic Leak Detection! Controlit was successfully installed on a Green Roof project as part of the building’s Quality Control & Leak Prevention plan. Our underlay, Controlit GS Single Ply, was installed under the synthetic waterproofing membrane. Integrity Testing with High-Voltage ELD equipment was performed right after waterproofing installation, ensuring the system’s integrity before adding the green roof layers. And that’s not all — after the completion of the Green Roof, Integrity Testing can still be performed using Low-Voltage ELD for ongoing Preventive Maintenance. CASE STUDY: Controlit & ELD on a Factory Roof A few years ago, we collaborated with a leading microchip manufacturer where CONTROLIT was installed on an 8,000 sqm roof, under a 1.8mm PVC membrane. Two ELD inspections were performed: 🛠️ Initial Inspection (left picture): Conducted immediately after the roofer’s installation. 🛠️ Second Inspection (right picture): Conducted months later, just before the factory’s opening. Results: ✅ Initial Inspection: Found 5 damages that were promptly repaired, validating the proper waterproofing installation by the roofing team. ⚠️ Second Inspection: Revealed 320 damages on the waterproofing membrane. What happened in between? Months of intense traffic on the roof, along with the installation of equipment like HVAC systems, led to significant damage. These damages were repaired, allowing the customer to start production with confidence that their roof was fully leak-free. Since then, regular Preventive Maintenance with ELD inspections ensures rapid identification and resolution of potential issues. Key Takeaways: 🔹 Include CONTROLIT and plan for ELD in your projects to avoid future troubles. 🔹 The main cause of roof damages is human error—stay vigilant! 🔹 Regularly test and inspect your roof to prevent costly leaks. '"The client will never agree to the extra cost." "The contractor will remove it from the specs." "The waterproofing manufacturer will never approve it." These are common objections to including Electronic Leak Detection (ELD) in a new project. As legitimate as they may sound, it’s important to understand the benefits ELD brings to everyone involved. ELD is designed for quality assurance—not to place blame, but to add an extra layer of safety for all parties in the project. Think about it: a lot happens on a roof during construction. People are constantly walking, working, and installing equipment for months after the waterproofing membrane is applied. The risk of damage doesn’t end when the waterproofing contractor finishes their work. This is where ELD, as an Integrity Testing method, becomes invaluable—providing peace of mind to everyone involved: ➡ Waterproofing Contractors: ELD confirms the quality of their work right after installation, ensuring everything was done to the highest standard. ➡ Waterproofing Manufacturers: It verifies that their materials perform as intended once applied to the roof. ➡ General Contractors: They can assess the quality of subcontractors' work, addressing any issues before handing the building over to the client. ➡ The Client: They can move in with confidence, knowing their roof is fully waterproof. Incorporating ELD into your quality control process doesn’t just protect your project from potential issues down the line—it adds value and security for everyone during construction.
