The European Union 🇪🇺 wishes to achieve a zero-emission building stock by 2050, by boosting renovation rates and reaching for the highest possible energy efficiency of buildings. However, homeowners often face frustrating obstacles in retrofitting their homes. On 11th June, more than 70 one-stop shops for home energy renovation and their supporters gathered in Brussels for the 1st EU Peers Summit. One-stop shops are a place where citizens can get independent, trustworthy and often free advice for their home renovations. A really key tool in decarbonising our building stock, which represents about half the EU's energy consumption. The summit officially launched a European community dedicated to learning, exchanging knowledge, gaining visibility, and advocating for energy-efficient home renovations. EU Peers initiative aims to create a thriving network of One-stop shops providers, involving 600 members from across Europe over three years. The recently adopted Energy Efficiency Directive and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive require Member States to roll out one One-stop shop for every 80,000 inhabitants or at least one per region to accompany homeowners, including those living in energy poverty and vulnerable households, on their renovation journey. 🏡 Find out more 👉 https://lnkd.in/eNzGR2hF

• We were fortunate to attend the Zero Building Academy as part of the EPBD.wise EU LIFE-funded project, where we explored the ambitious aims of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). With the directive’s goal of transforming Europe’s building stock into low-carbon, energy-efficient structures by 2050, the emphasis on National Building Renovation Plans (NBRPs) and Zero-Emission Buildings (ZEBs) has never been more crucial. During the webinar with Lukas Kranzl, we gained invaluable insights into the challenges, policy needs, and strategies for implementing NBRPs and ZEBs in countries such as Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Ukraine. 🗝️ Key takeaways include: ▫️ The Role of NBRPs: National Building Renovation Plans are essential in outlining clear strategies to achieve energy efficiency targets and promote sustainable practices across Europe. ▫️ Zero-Emission Buildings (ZEBs): The push for advanced energy standards emphasizes the importance of redefining our cities and communities, not just for energy savings but for overall sustainability. ▫️ Challenges & Strategies: Every country faces unique hurdles. However, tailored policies, stronger frameworks, and better integration of innovative technologies present an opportunity for Europe to lead in building renovation and energy efficiency. As we look at Latvia’s own progress, we see a significant opportunity to leverage these insights. Latvia, like many other European nations, is striving to balance energy efficiency with the needs of its communities. The concepts discussed at the Academy can help inform Latvia’s National Building Renovation Plan, ensuring that our buildings meet the 2050 climate targets while improving comfort, health, and safety for residents. The push towards Zero-Emission Buildings aligns with Latvia’s efforts to decarbonize its building stock, with an increasing focus on integrating renewable energy solutions, enhancing building insulation, and reducing emissions across the sector. The event highlighted the crucial need for adapting our built environment, not only to meet EU directives, but also to actively fight climate change. #LIFEproject #LIFEprogramme https://lnkd.in/dqbx47cP

  • ‼️ 2024 is set to be the hottest year on record! Average global temperature for the year is expected to reach 1.60°C above preindustrial levels. November's average temperature was 1.62°C above preindustrial levels. 📌 Significance of surpassing the 1.5°C threshold: -2024 will be the first year to exceed 1.5°C, but this does not mean the Paris Agreement has been breached, as it measures averages over decades. -This underscores the urgency of ambitious climate action to limit long-term global heating. 📌 Challenges to limiting heating: -Fossil fuel emissions continue to rise, counteracting global pledges to transition away from coal, oil, and gas. -The COP29 climate summit failed to make significant progress in advancing this transition. 📌 Escalation of extreme weather: -Heatwaves, fiercer storms, and intense wildfires are increasingly frequent and severe. -Particularly destructive wildfires occurred in North and South America, affecting the Amazon, Pantanal wetlands, and parts of the U.S. and Canada. 📌 Economic consequences: -Estimated global economic losses from extreme weather in 2024 reached $320 billion, 25% higher than the 10-year average. https://lnkd.in/dmqintYZ

On November 26, 2024, the EU Peers Transnational Community platform held a meeting to discuss how one-stop shops (OSS) for energy-efficient home renovations can succeed after initial EU funding ends. The focus was on two standout examples: Vienna and Valencia. Vienna’s OSS, HAUSKUNFT started in 2021 through an EU-funded project. It provides free consultations to over 600 homeowners monthly, guiding them on subsidies and finding trusted contractors. Its close ties with city officials and local utilities make the process smooth for residents. Valencia’s OSS began by addressing energy poverty and promoting solar panels. Now it tackles broader challenges like helping homes stay cool during heatwaves. Funded by local government, it uses tools like energy bills to spark interest in renovations. Both cities are looking for ways to keep these services running without relying entirely on public funding. Ideas discussed included forming partnerships with private companies and offering new types of services to bring in more income. Meeting materials are available on HumHub. Want access? • This report outlines the need for a comprehensive policy roadmap aimed at promoting the adoption of on-bill schemes within the EU residential sector. On-bill schemes leverage utility bills as a mechanism for repayment and involve various stakeholders in building renovation initiatives. These schemes offer unique features that are less commonly found in other financing options, enabling a better alignment of interests among renovation participants while addressing key barriers to energy-efficient upgrades. Furthermore, their scalability makes on-bill schemes a promising tool for advancing the EU's decarbonisation objectives. The report begins by identifying 11 potential obstacles to the adoption of on-bill schemes in the EU, categorizing them based on their origins—homeowners, utilities or financial institutions, and market-related factors. interested in all aspects of energy planning

- Varbūt ar revīziju, kā to veica Eiropas Revīzijas palāta, izanalizējot LIFE programmas klimata pielāgošanās projektus? 🌟 #EnergyEfficiency #BuildingRenovation #ClimateTargets #EUFunding
