Our ShareRes project has published Latvia’s regional self-assessment about energy communities. The authors – Ivars Kudrenickis and Gaidis Klavs - look at the local policy context and preconditions for launching new community initiatives in Riga Planning Region. The legal framework for energy communities is about to take its final shape in December. This report provides a good guide for everyone who is intereseted in energy transition or plans launching their own energy community project. #ShareResProject
Riga Planning Region
Government Administration
Public authority responsible for regional planning, cooperation between municipalities and other state institutions.
About us
Riga Planning Region is the capital region of Latvia. Its location in the centre of the Baltic states, bordering with European and Eastern cultures, has formed Riga region as a dynamic and competitive metropolitan region of Northern Europe. Riga Planning Region has a population of almost 1 million which is more than 1/2 of the total number of residents of Latvia and accounts for approximately 2/3 of Latvia's economic value – it makes the metropolitan region as a driving force of all Latvian economy, education, science, tourism, sports and cultural life. Region strengthens the role of Riga as a global-oriented Baltic metropolis and promotes international competitiveness. Region is composed of 9 municipalities – capital city of Riga, along with neighbouring resort city Jurmala and regional center Sigulda, as well as other municipalities with development centers of metropolitan importance adjacent to the city of Riga. Due to their placement and relatively comfortable reach of Riga, strong functional links have emerged, determined by the attraction of Riga as an economic, financial, and cultural centre and facilitated by daily commuting of the population. The regional level of governance ensures a connection between the national and local level of governance through the function of coordination. In this way Riga Planning Region is capable of covering the issues, which exceed the borders of one local government, and in the same time it defines the demand for territorial solutions of national level. The region develops and implements projects within the framework of regional development supporting measures. The projects elaborated and realized by Riga Planning Region is one way of advancing the implementation of the activities and reaching the results set out in the regional planning documents.

What about ☀️energy communities in Latvia's towns? The first demo project of rooftop PV and solar collectors on two multiapartment buildings was implemented at Marupe municipality in 2020. And it is still operational. Find out more about this good practice that was coordinated by Riga Planning Region (RPR) and Ilgvars Francis: https://lnkd.in/dWiU6kuw At RPR, we recognize the potential of energy communities for reaching our climate and energy goals. It is demonstrated by our own enrollment in related projects, including #ShareRESproject from the Interreg Europe programme. In the next few years, RPR will come up with support measures and improve its policy instruments to launch more pilots and community projects in the municipalities. Currently, we are waiting for the adoption of the national regulation. The Marupe pilot was part of #Co2mmunity project, also funded by the Interreg programme. #InterregEurope #energycommunities #ShareRESproject AGENEX - Extremadura Energy Agency

🌞 Energy communities are key to achieving a fair energy transition, empowering citizens to actively participate in the process. These communities enable citizens, SMEs, and public entities to collectively produce, consume, store, share, and sell renewable energy. Riga Planning Region is participating in the project “Sharing Renewable Energy through Energy Communities” or #ShareRESproject funded by Interreg Europe. Find out more at: https://lnkd.in/d9EUxCjC #ShareRESproject will foster experience exchange between different regions of the EU. Activities include sharing good practices, conducting masterclasses, hosting interregional events, and performing regional self-assessment studies. Our common goal is to overcome barriers and create enabling frameworks for innovative and inclusive renewable energy projects. As an outcome of this project, Riga Planning Region will integrate new support measures for energy communities within its development programme. Are you working on ideas for energy community projects in Latvia? Let’s get in touch! Watch the #ShareRES video on: https://lnkd.in/d8sqPK88 AGENEX - Extremadura Energy Agency

🏗️ 🇱🇻 BUILDSPACE Pilot 2: Energy Demand Analysis, Forecast & Climate Resilience🌟 🏙 The Pilot 2 will be tested in Riga, creating a reliable energy demand forecast considering climate change effects. More specifically, 1 or 2 municipal buildings will be selected for the testing of DT generation service and the integration of IoT and building data enabling dynamic energy building monitoring based on sensor readings. 🗣 These pilot services such as Energy Demand Analysis, Forecasting, and Climate Resilience are essential for Riga city to ensure effective allocation of resources, anticipate future energy requirements, adapt to climate change impacts, foster sustainable development, and achieve economic advantages. The BUILDSPACE services being tested are anticipated to offer valuable insights for planning and assessing policies and measures supporting sustainable energy management at both the building and city levels. The pilot program will generate specific evidence to aid informed decision-making for interventions. Sustainability stands as a cornerstone of our mission at BUILDSPACE. This commitment drives us to incorporate a variety of eco-conscious initiatives, such as energy-efficient electrical installations, heat recovery systems, and the incorporation of renewable energy sources. Our dedication lies in constructing a better future as we build the present.📏✅ To stay updated on the latest developments and progress of the #BUILDSPACEproject, visit our website and follow us on our social media.
