The Bank of England has devised a ‘Digital Pound Lab’ to explore potential CBDC usage. The ‘hands-on experimentation’ will cover the design phase for the digital pound, which will test Application Programming Interface (API) functionality. Various ‘innovative cases’ will be explored within a simulated environment, providing key insights into its wider development. According to Juniper Research, global digital wallet adoption is set to increase by over 15% by 2029 given their ability to foster financial inclusion. E-wallets are an appealing transaction method for consumers across developing markets, particularly given they can offer consumers basic insurance products and microloans via their services. Open banking can further enhance wallet usage as it enables apps and services to initiate payments. Instant payments via mobile devices will facilitate convenient and swift transactions. The Philippines central bank has lifted a ban on new electronic money issuers from non-bank financial institutions (EMI-NBFI). New NBFI applicants must demonstrate innovative plans targeting the wider market. If granted licenses, NBFIs will be able to facilitate electronic money transfer and remittance services, fostering financial inclusivity across consumers. India is projected to facilitate increased cross-border transactions this year as it explores greater adoption of its blockchain-based digital rupee. The CBDC will likely be integrated with existing digital payment systems as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) prioritises financial inclusion across users. The RBI is also implementing cloud facility across the financial industry, which is designed to enhance data security and respond to cybercrime concerns.
