Great Western Railway (GWR) is leading the way toward sustainable rail with their fast-charging battery train! Instead of scrapping older rail cars, GWR is transforming them with cutting-edge tech like 3D printing. Their latest innovation? A huge 1.8m rail gap gauging tool printed in vibrant ASA Orange on the Stratasys F770 printer. This tool helps align the train’s charging system with the track, making electrified travel smoother and more efficient. Why 3D printing? Traditional methods like CNC-routing plywood weren’t suitable due to stability issues, and molded fiberglass was too time-consuming and messy. Plus, the tool had to be made from an insulated material for safety near overhead power cables, ruling out metal. Before this, manual measurements were prone to errors and inefficiencies.
