He was educated at Queen's Park Academy, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 He was educated at Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.1 He was managing director of GUS between 1934 and 1946.1 He was chairman of GUS in 1946.1 He was created 1st Baronet Wolfson [U.K.] on 19 February 1962.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1963.1
