Remember this work bench I picked up a few weeks ago?
Here’s how it started…
I almost passed it by, because it was a little clumsy. It was sturdy as an oak, but wasn’t a well-built piece, if that makes sense. You can tell someone wanted to build a workbench and figured it out as they went along. The finger-holds in the drawers are what pushed me to buy it.
They endeared the piece to me.
I added the wheels (new from Home Depot) and tacked on some antique wood lath strips to the top to add some warmth and texture.
And I painted it in three coats of a custom mix of MMS Milk Paint – 5 parts Grain Sack to 1 part Trophy. It’s a beautiful soft gray that I’m totally in love with!
I left the painted finish raw, but I did apply Hemp Oil to the lath strips and wood box I fit into the recess.
I also hung a bar with buckets and hooks (from Ikea) along the back to hold Sharpies, scissors, pens, labels, etc.
And here it is…
I am pleased as punch with how it all came together.
I used a few things I bought for The Market on Chapel Hill as props for this shoot, like the little brush…
…and the Big Ben clock…
I bought tons of stuff on Friday, so Kriste and I were sorting and pricing it all today. I am going to have to work and rework the space to make it all fit!
Hopefully I’ll have it more organized tomorrow and I’ll share some pictures.
Until then…
You have such a way with things. Everything you touch comes out so beautiful and your photos just draw me in. You are such a blessing and inspiration to me.

My thoughts exactly.
Can’t wait to see what you’ll bring to the Market on Chapel Hill. It is a good thing I live no where near you!
You are amazing with color. Not everyone can visualize and match it up properly. Never disappointed with the results keep up the good work. Don’t forget to take 5 here and there.

Love it!!! And what’s so great is I have one of those in my basement. The house came with it. It doesn’t have the back piece on it though which would be nice to have. I’m sure I can find something that would work.
Thanks for sharing…

It turned out so great!!!
Nice piece! I love its rustic qualities- a true primitive!
This is beautiful! You have such an amazing eye for antiques and staging. I just love everything you do! I
Where did you find the bar that has the flower pots on it?
I love the bench and since you up graded it,it looks great . It looks very homemade, which i love.
I am pretty sure the bar and buckets came from IKEA as I have the same one behind
my washer and dryer. I also have a wire basket that holds fabric softener sheets.
The workbench is perfect. I have those Ikea buckets on the rod in green in my creation room. I couldn’t be happier with how much they hold and how handy they make it. It also gives a vintage touch for a fraction of the price.
This is a really cool project. Funk-tional… I would call it. A bit of a tribute to the past with a twist. Nice job, I have an old wooden parts tower…I’m going to do for my workshop—I think that this may be a nice combo. Thanks for the inspiration, Sandi
fantastic.
Wow! The piece looks amazing. I know you’re super pleased with how it turned out. I think my favorite part is the lath strips. Can’t wait for the Chapel Market!
Really fun. You added just the right texture and function to the piece. Trash to treasure, and as usual your photos are superb.
What a transformation!!!! I love the color, the added boards on top and that you took off the doors! The casters really give this piece the industrial look it needed too! Now it’s cool instead of shabby. Great job!
What a transformation! You had me at the antique lathe. I love what you did with this piece. It is a true show stopper, but then again…anything that you touch turns to gold!!
Love, love love it! What a transformation, I love the addition of the wood to the top, and the wheels. The grey really makes it pop with the wood and I like how you took of the doors and opened it up.
Always eye candy when you do reveals.

Sometimes, I have a weird eye…in the fifth photo, it seems to me (with the angle of the caster) that the front bench leg to my right looks like a ballerina’s leg, with her foot en pointe!
Beautiful piece, the wood top really glows with the application of the Hemp Oil.
Marion, you turned an ugly piece into a stunning, functional and so awesome piece. I love that color gray also. Thanks for sharing.
