Habitat fragmentation is a major driver of #biodiversity loss worldwide. In the Gobi Desert, Wildlife Conservation Society Mongolia has spent over a decade using GPS collars to understand how roads and fenced railways affect wildlife like khulans. We also work with nomadic herders to study how linear infrastructure affects livestock and people. Last August, in partnership with herders, GPS collars were placed on some livestock to provide insights into how fences and railways impact traditional herding practices.

The Mongolian saiga antelope is a critically endangered species, and its conservation is a top priority for WCS Mongolia. This year, our team has worked with a number of different stakeholders to better understand threats to the species. The biggest threat to nomadic ungulates in the Gobi is linear infrastructure. WCS is committed to working with all stakeholders to mitigate the impact of linear infrastructure on wildlife habitats and protect the biodiversity in the Gobi.
