As 2024 comes to a close, we at Prism Chambers would like to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to our clients and partners for their unwavering trust and support. This year has been an exciting journey filled with growth and many moments of joy. We wish all our friends, colleagues and collaborators a wonderful festive season! 🥳 -- A few highlights that have made 2024 truly special: 🤩 This year, we welcomed not one, but two Prism babies! Our enhanced parental leave policy and flexible working arrangements for new parents ensured we could support our team during their most precious periods of their lives. 🤩 Congratulations to our new rising stars: Medina T. and Ashwin Mudhoo, recognised in the ITR World Tax Rankings, and IFLR1000 Mauritius in Financial and Corporate respectively. These accolades are a testament to their dedication, hard work, and commitment to excellence. 🤩 Our Tax team has been ranked Tier 1 in Mauritius in both the General Tax and the Tax Controversy categories for the ITR (International Tax Review) World Tax Ranking 2025 and was short listed in the Tax Firm of the Year - Africa category for this year's ITR (International Tax Review) EMEA Tax Awards. 🤩 Our founder Johanne Hague was shortlisted in the Women Leaders in Law category for The African Legal Awards 2024. 🤩 On International Women’s Day, we hosted our first-ever afternoon high tea, bringing together remarkable women in our profession. It was a small gesture to celebrate their incredible contributions and inspire further collaboration. 🤩 We were proud to discuss Mauritius tax case law at the International Fiscal Association's first-ever congress on the African continent. Johanne Hague presented on the landmark Innodis case on a panel led by the eminent Jonathan Schwarz—the first Supreme Court transfer pricing case in Mauritius. 🤩 Two of our associates, Manesha Motee and Béatrice Phanjoo, attended the CMS Law Africa Academy, engaging with peers from across Africa and beyond to exchange ideas and sharpen their skills. 🤩 In line with our “collaborate, not compete” ethos, we’ve had the opportunity to partner with great colleagues on many matters and are ever so grateful to them for their trust: Tajnisha Rambocus Bissessur, Ryaad Owodally, Assad Khoosee, Feroz Hematally, Faraaz Jauffur, FCCA, ADIT, Roomesh Ramchurn, Heman Jeetun, ADIT, ACCA, MIPA, Oudai Mohun, Ryan Dennis Allas, Shameemah Abdool Raman, Joe Chan, Ravi Sookur, Bilshan Nursimulu, Khadijah Timol, Mathilde Parent Lagesse. 🤩 Last but certainly not least, Prism Chambers proudly entered into association with CMS, one of the leading European headquartered legal organisations. Johanne Hague and Medina T. share their thoughts on the key skills they believe are required in today's fast-paced world, to excel as a lawyer. Ashwin Mudhoo Kamna Sungkur Manesha Motee Béatrice Phanjoo Georgina Caldow Jorge Tavares d' Almeida
In today’s fast-moving world, top legal skills aren’t enough for lawyers to succeed! From AI to climate change, ESG to talent retention, lawyers face a rapidly evolving world full of fresh challenges, and in a digital age where information can be at our fingertips in seconds, it’s vital for lawyers to offer more than technical expertise. Business law experts Johanne Hague and Medina T. of CMS Prism discuss how lawyers must be able to grow and add value in broader ways, and how the leading factor that will help lawyers of all levels thrive in our fast-changing world, is having a great attitude: https://lnkd.in/dkRCKSar “Be willing to learn and to invest your precious time in your own professional growth,” says Johanne. “Technical and legal skills can be acquired, but if you have the right attitude and remain humble regardless of your professional level, then I truly believe you can thrive in any environment.” “There's always room for improvement and learning,” says Medina, a Rising Star in this year’s ITR World Tax rankings, who worked on a range of ‘soft skills’ including collaboration, personal branding, and leadership at a CMS Africa Academy. “I think those attributes can make you evolve from a good to a great lawyer.” Read more about the importance of the right attitude: https://lnkd.in/dkRCKSar #CMSLegal #InvestinAfrica #Mindset #CMSPrism #CMSAcademy #CareerDevelopment #Mauritius

As we wrap up 2024, I wish to thank my brilliant videographer, Natacha Soulange, without whom this podcast would not exist. This year, we filmed and launched 34 episodes! I have loved every single one of them and look forward to more inspiration in 2025. A huge thank you to all our listeners, guests, and supporters for making this possible. Here’s to another year of storytelling. *** "In the courtroom, the lawyer is both a student and a teacher." – Ruth Bader Ginsburg For the last episode of Beyond the Black Letter Law for 2024, it felt only right to reflect on the art of advocacy and what it takes to become a truly skilled litigator. This week, we have the privilege of welcoming Sanjay Bhuckory, SC, a seasoned Senior Counsel, to share his remarkable journey. From the life-changing movie that inspired him to pivot his career path to invaluable insights on appearing before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, Sanjay also offers his perspective on the future of the legal profession. Listening to Sanjay after the recording reminded me of a timeless truth: books can teach you the law, but experience shapes the advocate. It’s a gift we should never take for granted—and I found myself unintentionally taking notes! 🎙 The full episode drops this Wednesday on all our usual platforms. Medina T. Gender diversity is an issue I care deeply about—but it’s also one I’ve had conflicting feelings about over time. Here’s the truth: I’m not a fan of positive discrimination. (There, I’ve said it!) What I do believe in, however, is creating access to opportunity (as opposed to merely talking about "equal opportunities"), fostering equity, and dismantling both conscious and unconscious biases. This week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Shalini Jugessur, Managing Director at Accenture Technology Mauritius, on our latest podcast episode. Shalini’s professional journey is proof of what can be achieved in a truly meritocratic environment—one that values skills, competence, and experience over legacy and connections. We had a thoughtful conversation about: ✅ Why embedding DEI within an organisation’s culture is non-negotiable ✅ How we can level the playing level ✅ Leadership and humility ✅ How to address brain drain in Mauritius ✅ The transformative power of technology as a tool for giving back Thank you, Shalini, for sharing your story and your insights. Full episode out on our usual platforms on Thursday! Medina T. Ashwin Mudhoo Kamna Sungkur Manesha Motee Béatrice Phanjoo Yashmee Dewoo Issur Natacha Soulange

Out of the deepest struggles, something beautiful can emerge. This week’s guest is living proof of that. Having faced a toxic partnership and an unhealthy relationship with food, he has completely transformed his life with grit, determination, and unwavering discipline. In this week’s episode, François Colin shares his remarkable journey of resilience—from hitting rock bottom to stepping into the cage to fight an MMA champion in front of thousands. This powerful conversation will resonate with so many—whether you’re navigating tough times, battling low self-esteem, or feeling held back by fear or anxiety. Thank you, Francois, for your openness and honesty. The full episode drops this Wednesday on our usual channels—don’t miss it! Medina T. Rethinking Society and the Legal Profession This was the overarching theme of the Mauritius Bar Association's annual conference held yesterday—a gathering of confrères et consoeurs to reflect on issues that matter and demand our continued attention. The discussions spanned pressing areas such as constitutional reforms, the interplay between social media and our Code of Ethics, and the evolving role of the legal profession in the machinery of justice. The panelists were outstanding, and I particularly appreciated the insightful and thought-provoking contributions of Antoine Domingue SC, former DPP Satyajit Boolell SC, the current DPP Rashid Ahmine, Louis Eric RIBOT, and Sunil Banymandhub. The day beautifully concluded with a truly - for want of a better word - epic speech by our new Attorney General, Gavin Glover SC. Your words have inspired us and reignited hope for the future. Now, it is both our duty and collective responsibility to rebuild the noblesse of the profession that has sadly eroded in recent years. On my part, I will continue to relentlessly promote gender diversity within the profession, encourage women to uplift and empower one another and bring forth meaningful conversations with people who inspire. I am hopeful that, together, we can embrace a profession that not only serves justice but also reflects the highest standards of integrity and inclusivity.
