Mainland #Africa's smallest state, #Djibouti, is using the power of state capital and leveraging its geopolitically strategic location to punch above its weight, in an attempt to position itself as the Singapore of the Horn of Africa. The tiny state of one million is located near the world’s busiest shipping lands with control of access to the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. It provides refuelling, transshipment and an entrepôt for #Ethiopia as well as hosting an array of foreign naval bases (Germany, Spain, Italy, France, the USA, the UK, China, and Saudi Arabia), on the opposite side of the Red Sea from the Houthi-controlled shores of Yemen. The Djibouti Sovereign Fund (Fonds Souverain de Djibouti, FSD) plans to double the GDP of the East African country within seven years from about US$3.7 billion in 2023 to US$7.5 billion by 2030 – and it is playing on its strengths to boost the economy.
