The first major-label showcase for his sad, husky voice and terse, tender songwriting, Devotion + Doubt did more than establish Richard Buckner as a leader in the alt-country movement. It also demonstrated just how far he’d deviate from roots-music conventions to create the subtle textures and sometimes stark settings that best suited his hurt-filled songs. Written in the wake of his first divorce, songs like “Home” couldn’t seem any sparer, but Buckner and guests from Giant Sand and Calexico provide a wealth of fine detail.
