Although always adventurous when it comes to trying out new forms, Richard Buckner ventures even further afield with the ambient and experimental textures that surround his typically forlorn lyrics and honeyed baritone on Surrounded. And while such daring mergers of new and old always pose unique challenges, the richly layered “Foundation” and the oddly effervescent “Cut” prove there’s most definitely a place for drones and loops within Buckner’s finely honed and utterly idiosyncratic brand of folk and country.
