Somewhere in the interstices of funk, electronica, jazz and prog resides drummer Benny Greb. His Grebfruit 2 is a riot of tight grooves, layered vocals (wordless and otherwise), ambitious songcraft and seasoned musicianship. The John Oliver samples on “Mrs Thomas” are a treat, as are the driving beats and thicket of multitracked voices on “Grebchestra” and “Tricky”. An a cappella treatment of “Blackbird” by The Beatles closes the set in contemplative fashion.
