Two contrasting works by Steve Reich are treated to thrilling world premiere recordings. “Pulse”, written in 2015 for winds, strings, electric piano and bass, is one of the Minimalist composer’s calmer, more contemplative works, its musical phrases gently undulating, unfolding and morphing over a simple, pulsating bassline. From 2013, Quartet—for two vibraphones and two pianos—is classic Reich. Its dancing rhythms and subtly changing harmonies are performed with irrepressible, driving spirit, impeccable ensemble and an intuitive sense of instrumental balance and blend.
