If Meera’s debut release, 2019 EP I’ve Never Been Happier to Be Lost, displayed maturity beyond her years—the singer-songwriter was 23 at the time she put it out—there’s a refreshing touch of whimsy to its follow-up, Smile - Ability. A joyous vibe imbues each of the four tracks on which her Hindustani classical-trained, folk and jazz-influenced voice shines bright. Opener “Mango Milkshake” is particularly irresistible, while there’s a delicate sweetness to the lilting “23” and “Decent People”. And on the jangly “Tear Me Apart”, about relationship woes, even her annoyance is honey-coated.
