Youth Code Essentials

Few groups channel the nihilistic vibe and abrasive sound of industrial rock’s ’80s and ’90s heyday more than Youth Code. Unsurprisingly, the L.A. duo are approved by that scene’s founders—they’ve opened for Skinny Puppy and released music on a label co-founded by members of Psychic TV—because of a penchant for drilling metallic beats, dramatic synth production and frantic, fractured vocals. But for all their punkish confrontation, Youth Code offer surprising detours: “For Am I Cursed” channels the gothic New Wave favoured by early Nine Inch Nails, while the cinematic “(Armed)” is unsettled instrumental electro.
