A message from our Founder, Mimi Nicklin - Empathy Advocate, from Riyadh this week as she steps onto the stage Cityscape Global.
Bestselling Author, Chief Empathy Officer, Podcaster. Training Listening Led-Leadership and creating more empathy, everywhere. Exec Coach. 16,500 professional students globally. HRD Corp Certified.
"You look like you were made for the Abaya" she told me. "Perhaps it is my soul that was" I answer. You can see joy. It's not just the smile or the eyes, it's an energy. Even in a photo we have this magical ability to sense it. To feel it as if somehow the other person's soul speaks to yours. It is contagious. It's why we smile back when people smile at us. Being on stage in Riyadh yesterday with Cityscape Global created just this. Joy, energy, comfort. Saudi Arabia is a misunderstood, or perhaps just mysterious, place to many. The country is trying hard to change this and they are winning. But as with all change, it will take time. This country and it's people have a gentle hospitality that many countries cannot recreate. There is optimism, eagerness to learn, enthusiasm for the future. And inclusion that is perhaps unexpected to those who haven't seen it for themselves. No one who enters the Kingdom "has" to wear an abaya or the headscarf, but if you truly want to connect with people, to understand them, and yes, to empathise with them, surely that starts with the respect to represent yourself as aligned to them? To show solidarity, alignment, high regard? To spend your days with your colleague and to live as they do? This is true connectivity. And beyond that true inclusion to be allowed in to do exactly this. To be included as one. Do I feel joy? Yes. But more than that, I feel whole. To be able to do this work, in this country. And this, I know deeply and truly, is a gift. I don't take it for granted for a moment. Thank you #Riyadh. #empathy #dream #femaleleadership #femaleCEO #author #saudi #KSA #saudiarabia #businesstravel #dreams #purpose #kindness #arab #gulf #stage #keynote #speaker #speaking #travel #win #grow

Have you ever noticed how perfectly phrased questions can completely change a conversation? Perhaps it’s finding a way to get your teenager to open up. Or encouraging a junior team member to speak up. Or even getting your young child to actually answer the question “What did you do at school today?” with something more than just “nothing.” :) Here’s a little piece of mastery for you. In leadership and in life, it’s often not the “why” that leads to real solutions but the “how” we can move forward together. When we use the word “how,” we tap into neurolinguistic programming, enabling the subconscious mind to add value and context to the conversation. Switching From Why to How (it’s genius, give it a go!) ✨ By switching from why to how, you remove the ‘offensive’ (attacking) nature of the word ‘why’ and replace it with a more equal, open, inquiry-based “how.” ✨ You give people the opportunity to think through the context of their answers. ✨ How is thought-provoking rather than defense-creating. So, the next time you’re in a challenging conversation, pause, and consider these three questions: 💭 How can we make this work together? 💭 How do I know I am right? 💭 How do we move forward? Ability is what you're capable of doing. Intention determines how you deliver it. At the recent Global HR Excellence Energy Summit 2024, during her keynote our founder Mimi Nicklin - Empathy Advocate shared a powerful reminder: Are you truly present with your team? This isn’t just about being physically in the room or on the screen; it’s about full engagement, listening, connecting, and understanding. Whether meeting in person or virtually, we all need to pause and ask ourselves: Are we simply sharing space, or are we truly showing up? Developing a presence is a skill that requires intentional practice. Even those of us specializing in empathy find moments where we must consciously turn our focus from ourselves to others. It’s a universal tendency, proven by social science, to naturally slip into inward focus. Researchers note that as we place more emphasis on our own achievements, it becomes increasingly challenging to see from another’s perspective. In today’s social media-driven world, where self-promotion is everywhere, this authentic presence is not only rare but essential. To truly connect with those we lead and tap into their insights, presence is foundational. For us, it is at the heart of Listening Led Leadership. Active listening goes beyond just our ears; it involves our body language, eye contact, and overall energy. Presence isn’t passive; it’s an active skillset and, ultimately, the cornerstone of any effective leadership strategy. #empathy #empathyeverywhere #empathyinleadership #inspiringleadership #psychologicalsafety #inclusiveleadership #listeningledleadership #peoplefirst #leadwithpurpose

Five years ago, when our founder, Mimi Nicklin, introduced a keynote on Empathy & Tech, it was met with hesitation. Organisers looked puzzled, questioning, "Are you sure?" Skepticism followed, year after year, as connecting empathy with workplaces, AI, and technology was still an unusual concept. But after five years of Empathy Everywhere, the vision is now stronger than ever. Last week, at the world’s largest technology conference in Dubai, 180,000 delegates gathered to hear this message. The response was overwhelming; a packed house, with overflow crowds outside, and, by lunchtime, empathy was mentioned by other speakers 33 times. The tide is truly turning. Leaders, the media, and this community are embracing empathy in action. This shared vision now spans 5.9 million views, 60,000 followers, and over $16 million in reach. The ripple effect has begun. Thank you for being part of this journey with us; empathy is here to stay. #empathyatwork #futureofwork #dei #leadership #aie #organisationalculture #mentalhealth #empathy #culture

Are you truly present with your team? I am not asking if you are physically there, but are you fully engaged, listening, connecting, and understanding? Whether in person or virtually, ask yourself: are you sharing space or truly showing up? As with any behavioural shift, becoming more present takes intentional practice. Even in the specialism I work within, I catch myself in conversations (often with my daughter or mom!) where I have to intentionally focus away from myself and my tasks at hand and back to the other person. Social science has shown that the tendency to focus inward on ourselves is something we’re all susceptible to experiencing and researchers have found that the more we focus on our own achievements, the harder it then becomes to take into account the perspective of those around us. In a social media world where shouting about your achievements seems to be the order of the day, this authentic presence of mind has become ever more valued. If we are to become more successful in our interactions with others – if we’re going to have any success tapping into the knowledge, skills, and insights of those we lead, we need the foundational stone in Listening Led Leadership to be our presence. Presence demands us to actively listen more than we speak - yes with your ears, but also with your body language, your eye contact, and your overall energy. Presence is an active skill set, which makes it another focus area for your Listening Leadership strategy. In truth, this one should be at the very top. #empathy #empathyeverywhere #empathyinleadership #inspiringleadership #diversity #inclusion #psychologicalsafety #femaleleader #femaleceo #win #grow #succeed #culture

The secret to leadership lies in the name—people need to want to be led by you. As Oji Udezue highlighted yesterday at Gitex North Star, “The definition of leadership is having people who want to follow you.” Our founder, Mimi Nicklin, will be taking the stage at GITEX GLOBAL Largest Tech & Startup Show in the World Expand North Star on Wednesday, 16th October from 11:30 – 12:00 at Dubai Harbour, presenting a keynote titled The Empathy Algorithm. With fresh content and new perspectives on how AI can reshape work, leadership, and life for the better, this session promises to be insightful. What can you expect? We’ll explore the powerful intersection of technology, empathy, and brand marketing, showing how leaders can bring humanity to the forefront of a tech-driven reality. She will introduce our newest team member, MAYA—an android and our new Growth Manager—and share why the future of empathy may rest within AI itself. Following the keynote, she will welcome Sir Martin Sorrell to the stage, an influential figure in the industry. Later, she will join The Marketing Society for an important conversation about the uncomfortable truths surrounding the state of gender equality initiatives in the marketing industry. #leadership #empathyalgorithm #expandnorthstar #AIandempathy #empathyatwork #gitexglobal #techleadership

Do you feel overwhelmed by the amount you have to do every day? Do you feel you never get to the end of your to-do list by the end of the day? Do you feel burnt out by the constant pressure? Many people struggle with endless emails and late-night conference calls. It’s crucial to establish clear boundaries and learn how to compartmentalise life in a way that prioritises your well-being. Self Empathy is key. It requires slowing down, reflecting, and understanding your own needs. Only you can be responsible for identifying and activating the boundaries you need. Self Empathy can be the difference between thriving and surviving at work. #empathy #selfempathy #emotionalintelligence #personalgrowth #mentalhealth #worklifebalance #win #grow #succeed #culture

Do your teams empathise with you? Are you empathising with your leader? We occasionally forget that empathy goes both ways and it's not only about leadership and senior HR teams understanding their staff, but their staff doing the same to them. The more senior you get in an organisation, the harder the decisions become and the more stress these create - do you feel your team understands your reality? And if not, how do we create empathy upwards and throughout our teams? #empathyeverywhere #empathy #leadership #femaleleadership #win #grow #communication #leadershipskills #leadershipdevelopment
