The emergence of hybrid threats and the changing maritime security landscape have motivated the EU to update its maritime security strategy in 2023. Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia Deputy Head of Mission, Timo Goosmann, in his special remarks at the opening of the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) South China Sea (SCS) Conference 2024 yesterday outlined the potential of the revised strategy as an important toolkit for partnerships. Timo Goosmann also highlighted the strategic relevance of the South China Sea to the EU, with almost 40% of the bloc's incoming trade sailing through this globally important waterway, adding that geopolitical tensions and escalations not only serve as a massive threat to disrupt trade but also undermine principles of international law, especially UNCLOS. "The EU deeply cares. The EU has stepped up its engagement on these issues and will continue to be a strong voice for the de-escalation and for the respect of international law," he said, adding that Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025 holds a pivotal role to serve as a platform to discuss and uphold regional stability as well as to advance a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea. #EUinMalaysia 🇪🇺🤝🇲🇾 #CreatingOpportunitiesForASustainableTomorrow #SCS2024

🌊Bridging Two Continents: Marine Biotechnology and Research Opportunities in Malaysia and Beyond 🇪🇺🇲🇾 We’re thrilled to highlight the successful collaboration between Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and Ghent University (UGhent) in Belgium, led by Professor Yeong Yik Sung, Director of the Institute of Climate Adaptation and Marine Biotechnology (ICAMB). As the coordinator of this Horizon 2020 project, Professor Sung has spearheaded efforts to develop sustainable solutions for aquaculture, reinforcing essential B2B partnerships in the process. The recent 2nd International Conference in Marine Biotechnology (ICOMB2024) on 24-26 September was a testament to this remarkable partnership, drawing 120 participants to celebrate and discuss future advancements. The event was honoured by the presence of HE Peter Van Acker, Ambassador of Belgium to Malaysia, highlighting the reinforcement of international connections in marine technology. Esteemed keynote speakers included Emeritus Professor Patrick Sorgeloos, a world authority in artemia (brine shrimp or sea monkeys) studies and holder of the Sultan Mizan Professorial Chair, alongside Professor Hans Nauwynck, a renowned virology expert from UGhent's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and Professor Tengku Sifzizul Tengku Muhammad, a molecular biology expert from UMT. The conference also showcased insights from Dr K.R.M.H. Tatas Brotosudarmo of EURAXESS ASEAN, who outlined promising research funding opportunities through Horizon Europe, paving the way for deeper collaborations between Belgian and Malaysian academic communities. Concurrently, Malaysian researchers in the Kuala Lumpur region had the unique opportunity to explore Horizon Europe grant possibilities through workshops on 26-27 September, organized by EURAXESS in ASEAN. These sessions, attended by 70 faculty members and junior professors from Taylor's University, Sunway University, Monash University Malaysia, and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), provided practical insights and interactive exercises to help researchers navigate EU funding channels. Mr. Eero Oinonen from the Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia emphasized the accessibility of Horizon Europe funding across Malaysian higher education institutions, promoting the exploration of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) and Pillar II as a crucial step towards successful grant applications. The EU Delegation thanks session hosts Ms. Adeline Yong Sui Yen from Taylor's University, and Prof Kushsairy Kadir, Prof Mohd Khairil Bin Rahmat, and Dr Woei Yenn Tong from UniKL for their support. Horizon Europe’s substantial €95.5 billion budget not only tackles pressing global issues like climate change but also fosters EU competitiveness, knowledge dissemination, and innovative growth. 🌐 #MarineBiotechnology #Sustainability #ResearchOpportunities #HorizonEurope #Innovation #GlobalCollaboration #Aquaculture #ResearchFunding
