Pottery & Purpose: A Leadership Team's Creative Year-End Adventure As the year comes to a close, our leadership team decided to end it with something a little unconventional — a pottery team-building event. And let me tell you, it was an experience that was both humbling and inspiring. Turns out, there’s a lot to learn from spinning clay, even when it feels like your masterpiece is destined for the reject pile. Lessons in Leadership (And Clay) 1. Embrace Imperfection: Like a potter shaping a vessel, leadership isn't about making everything perfect — it's about learning from every twist and turn. Some of us tried to mold the clay with the precision of a seasoned artisan, only to watch it collapse in on itself. Sound familiar? Leading a team often involves setbacks, but it’s the recovery that counts. As the saying goes, “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” – Nelson Mandela. Our messes became our lessons. 2. Patience is Key: If you've ever tried to center a piece of clay on a wheel, you know that it takes time, focus, and some strength (your palms need to push hard in certain angles). Just like leadership, it’s easy to rush things and expect immediate results. But as we found out with our pots, sometimes slow and steady is the secret to success. 3. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work (Even in Clay): While some of us focused on sculpting the perfect bowl, others learned the importance of working together. Whether it was lending a hand to steady a shaking pot or offering a reassuring word when someone’s clay had the consistency of wet chee cheong fun (rice noodle roll), it was clear that the best results came when we collaborated. 4. Let Go of Control (And Maybe Your Expectations) and asking for Help: At one point, a few of us got a little... too attached to our vision for the perfect pot. But clay has a mind of its own, and the more we tried to force it, the more it slipped through our fingers. Sometimes, as leaders, we need to let go of the need for total control and allow things (and people!) to evolve naturally. Seeking assistance is also GOLD. I asked for help from our Coach plenty of times and honestly owe it to him for the bowl that was eventually shaped. The Messy Conclusion Or conclusion to the messy play: While our pots may not grace the Louvre, our laughter was the real masterpiece. From clay splatters to "abstract leadership" creations, the day reminded us to embrace imperfections with a smile. To our Leadership Team that we are proud of, THANK YOU for being that unique you, and for all that creativity, growth mindset and resilience you bring to the table. Here’s to a year of Refine and Rise - KASS' theme for 2025. • The holiday season is here, and we’re wrapping up 2024 with gratitude, joy, and lots of scrumptious food! Our final Townhall of the year brought together all our regional teams across 7 ASEAN countries. It was a meaningful session as we reflected on our achievements, celebrated milestones, and looked forward to a bright future together. A highlight of the event? Welcoming our newest #KASSianz during the much-anticipated introduction session – the energy was infectious! In KASS International, one of our traditions is that newbies need to display their talents. We had a fellow Malaysian from our Patent team singing a Chinese song, a fellow Indonesian from our Indonesian Translation team singing an Indonesian song, a magic trick and artistic sketches displayed! We like that we get to see our newbies' unique personalities shining through. Of course, no year-end celebration is complete without good food. From velvety mashed potatoes to a savory Middle Eastern rice dish, we indulged in a feast thoughtfully catered by PichaEats. What made it extra special? The meals were lovingly prepared by skilled chefs from the refugee community – a small way we could support their inspiring journey. And what’s the holiday season without a little Secret Santa fun? The gift exchange brought laughter, surprises, and plenty of festive cheer, wrapping up our day with warmth and camaraderie. As we close the book on 2024, we’re already gearing up for an exciting 2025, ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities with enthusiasm. From all of us at KASS International, thank you for being part of our journey. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year filled with love, joy, and success! Here's to another incredible year ahead! #KASSTheIPExperts #IntellectualProperty #ASEAN

It’s inspiring to see SMEs taking charge of their growth by unlocking the potential of Intellectual Property (IP)—a powerful yet often underutilized business tool. Last week, I had the chance to speak at the WIPO Intellectual Property Management Clinic, organized by World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO, Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), the ASEAN-BAC Malaysia, the The ASEAN Secretariat, and supported by the Japan Patent Office. They created a platform to encourage SMEs to think beyond boundaries and embrace IP as a strategic asset. I had the privilege of engaging with industry experts to explore how IP can serve as the backbone of scalability, innovation, and resilience for businesses. From patents to trademarks, IP isn’t just about protection—it’s about building sustainable, long-term success. 🎯 Why Should SMEs Prioritize IP? • Scalability: Leverage IP to grow from a local business into a global competitor. • Revenue Growth: Unlock new streams of income through licensing and partnerships. • Brand Strength: Differentiate your business and build trust in competitive markets. • Innovation Security: Protect your unique ideas and secure your business’s future. This clinic wasn’t just a learning experience—it was about providing SMEs with actionable tools to navigate today’s dynamic markets and thrive. A huge thank you to the incredible speakers and panelists, including Director General Mr. Kamal Kormin, Deputy Director General (Strategic & Technical) Ms. Yusnieza Syarmila Yusoff, whose expertise made this event so impactful. Together, we’re championing the role of IP in driving business growth and creating opportunities for success. How do you think IP can better fuel success for SMEs or even larger corporations? 🚀 #WIPO #SMEGrowth #IPStrategy #Innovation #MyIPO

How does one know they are ready for a board position? That was one of the topics discussed at the Board Awareness Programme (BAP) organised by the volunteers of the 30% Club Malaysia in collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Berhad and MyWIE on 27 November 2024. I had the pleasure of assisting with the organising of this event and moderating the panel discussion. Here, female leadership and diversity in boardrooms took center stage. ✨ It was an incredible experience to sit among women leaders who are shaping the future of corporate governance. Thanks to all of you who attended, and a special thanks to Dr Sharbanom Abu Bakar, Datuk Ir. Rosaline Ganendra, Jenifer Thien, and Dato’ Roslina Zainal who shared their journey and experiences as board members. Pn. Feldatun Sharif, Chief People Officer of TNB and Pn. Nurul Ain Abdul Latif, Executive Director of PwC and Chair of 30% Club Malaysia gave inspiring opening and welcome remarks. As a moderator, I got the chance to uncover the personal experiences and stories from our esteemed panelists: the importance of mentorship, navigating stereotypes, and how diversity—particularly female leaders from STEM backgrounds— enrich board discussions. 🌍 Discussions like these help women reflect on their potential and empower them to grow into powerful leaders! They also know they have a team of women who have been there and done that, and are keen to pay it forward. A big shoutout to the 30% Club Malaysia for its role in advancing these crucial conversations! If you’re curious to find out more about this event, read the 2-part write-up here: https://lnkd.in/gCC7pPw5 | https://lnkd.in/gDYaVMwV. How do you think we can encourage more women to step into leadership roles? I’d love to hear your thoughts! 🚀 #Diversity #Board #CorporateGovernance #FemaleLeadership #STEM | KASS International

𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐌, 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 In industries like energy, engineering and construction, leadership has historically been male-dominated. However, it’s time to challenge these norms. This was one of the topics that were discussed during the recently concluded Board Awareness Program: Women in STEM: Power Up! event organised by the 30% Club Malaysia, Tenaga Nasional Berhad and MyWiE. TNB’s Chief People Officer, Feldatun Sharif, highlighted the strides being made to amplify women in leadership. At TNB, almost 50% of the Board Seats and 26% of senior management roles are held by women, thanks to strategic decisions and comprehensive programmes promoting inclusion at critical levels of leadership, though inclusive work practices. “Leadership development is an evolving journey. Individuals gain 70% of their knowledge from job-related experiences, 20% from interactions, and 10% from formal education,” she said, emphasising the need for continuous growth and development. Leadership is not just about breaking barriers, but about creating pathways for others to follow. Together, we must continue to challenge norms and celebrate diversity across all fields. At the event, 30% Club Malaysia Chair Nurul Ain Abdul Latif said one key aspect of leadership is about building robust, sustainable talent pipelines that are board-ready and future-focused. She stressed the importance of advocating for gender diversity in leadership. Strategic campaigns, including those led by PwC Malaysia, are crucial in advancing impactful agendas, she added. “A key focus was on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), which is central to achieving gender diversity goals. The need for a sustainable, board-ready talent pipeline is critical, especially considering the different skill sets required for C-suite and board positions. Conducting the right programmes are essential to ensure female talent is ready for these roles, with statistics showing their significant contributions to boards. Collaboration is essential, especially in industries like energy, where there are fewer women in technical leadership roles. Interestingly, while 80% of women leaders come from financial backgrounds, there’s a growing need for more women in technical fields. “Building a robust talent pipeline with the right skills is crucial. “Networking and male allyship are key in advocating for women leaders,” said Nurul A’in in her keynote address. At the event, Dr Sharbanom Abu Bakar spoke about her board journey.  There was also a panel discussion where the panelists Datuk Ir. Rosaline Ganendra, Jenifer Thien, and Dato’ Roslina Zainal who shared their journey and experiences as board members. The event was moderated by our own Geetha Kandiah. The upcoming post will feature Dr Sharbanom Abu Bakar and the insightful panel discussion. Stay Tuned!
