The Personal Data Protection Commissioner has revealed that the first four of the previously announced seven new data protection guidelines and the revised Data Protection Standards will be released in early 2025. These guidelines and updated standards will specify the new and amended provisions of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 and set out the details of the enhanced compliance requirements. The remaining three guidelines will be released in Q3 of 2025. Join our seminar, co-hosted by Italcham Malaysia - Italian Chamber of Commerce in Malaysia on 28 November 2024, to learn more about the reform, what is already known about the new guidelines, and what steps should be taken now to prepare for the substantial reform and to remain compliant. On 18 October 2024, the Prime Minister of #Malaysia unveiled the country's Budget for 2025, which seeks to build upon previous budgets and continue the country's ongoing economic transformation. For the second year in a row, the government has announced the largest budget in the country's history with a substantial allocation of MYR 421 billion for 2025. Under the overarching theme of "Reinvigorating the Economy, Driving Reforms and Prospering the Rakyat", the budget is underpinned by three key principles: reinvigorating the economy, catalysing transformative change and improving the overall wellbeing of the people. The budget's overall vision reflects a strong commitment to steer the nation towards a sustainable and prosperous future through five strategic initiatives: managing the economy, driving more decisive reforms, eliminating bureaucratic inefficiencies, increasing wages and incomes, and addressing the rising cost of living. The budget also focuses on ESG incentives, reflecting the country's commitment to become a carbon-neutral nation by 2050 through the introduction of measures such as a carbon tax and tax incentives for carbon capture, use and storage activities. The budget also marks a significant milestone in Malaysia's journey towards a digital future, with several initiatives aimed at strengthening the digital economy and accelerating the adoption of AI. These measures are unsurprising in light of Malaysia's ambition to attract data centres and become a key player in the data space. Overall, Budget 2025 aims to restructure the Malaysian economy and propel the nation towards realising its full potential as an Asian powerhouse. In particular, it demonstrates the government's commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the digital age and equipping its workforce for the future. To give investors an overview of the measures to come, we have prepared a brief summary of the Budget and its announcements.
