💡"Sell an idea, not a product (or a report!)" As this weekend our co-founder Michel Mustapha Raggio, CFA attended the official announcement of the local finalists of the CFA Institute Research Challenge*, this gives us an opportunity to reflect on the trends and market forces that are shaping the #marketresearch field and more broadly the #finance industry. For context, the #CFAInstituteResearchChallenge is an annual global #equityresearch competition which provides university students with real-world experience in equity analysis, research report writing, and presentation skills while obtaining hands-on mentoring in financial analysis. A recurring theme during the event was the rise of #artificialintelligence as a threat/opportunity to finance professions. The finance industry is a very pragmatic one and everyone recognizes that A.I. is here to stay and that it will transform and reshape the jobs and professions in the industry. So what's the point of learning equity research and financial analysis when #AI will do that for you? CFA Society Malaysia President Jin Yoong Chong, CFA provided a perfect answer to this question in his intro speech: "Sell an idea, not a product (or a report!)" The job of a #financialanalyst is not to just compile a report or an investment pamphlet. Ultimately, the job of a financial analyst is to build a compelling investment thesis and to sell a story that tells you why you should or should not make an investment! As financial analysts are researching on businesses and markets, they are constantly turning to any new tools that will help them build a compelling case. This is exactly what we are doing at Newell Road. We help professionals cut through the noise and highlight what matters, and answer the question "So What?" Quote of the day: "Done Is Better Than Perfect" I had the opportunity to be a mentor to a team of young students in the CFA Institute Research Challenge, and this morning was the official announcement of the top finalists... we didn't make it 💔 but I couldn't be more proud of my team, so kudos to Danial Nazeem Jasri, kewoon eer, Wong Yi Wen, Venice Ting Rei Sai, Yan Qi Lim 👏 Kudos to these young students in Finance and Actuarial Science 🎓 who did an amazing work and produced an outstanding equity research report that is on par with professional industry standards💡I have no doubt that you will continue to achieve great things in the future 🚀 (Also congrats to Danial for recently becoming President of the local AIESEC club). And of course, congratulations to the teams that made it to the finals 🎉 The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an invaluable opportunity that equips students with practical skills and prepares them for the realities of the finance industry, and today's event exceeded expectations! One recurring theme throughout today's event was the rise of #AI as a challenge to the professions in the industry. Artificial Intelligence is here to stay, but today's speakers offered great advice in that regard. In particular, I loved one quote from CFA Society Malaysia President Jin Yoong Chong, CFA's presentation: "Sell an idea, not a product (or a report!)"💡 As new tools come in to replace the analytical work of financial analysts, we need to remember that in the end the job of financial professionals is not just to perform computations but to provide financial advice! The job of an analyst is not to merely produce a pamphlet for a financial product, but to build a compelling investment thesis and to sell a story as to why a client should or should not make an investment! A very engaging speaker session – with Mohamed Farith Mohamed Jamal (Senior Manager Coverage and Sales, Securities Industry Development Corporation (SIDC)), YiLing Lau, CFA (Senior Manager, Alvarez & Marsal), and Alex Chin, CFA (CIO, Generali Malaysia) – also provided valuable tips and advice to all participants, noting that besides artificial intelligence, the competition among finance graduates is increasing year after year, and accreditations such as the CFA designations are more and more important to stand out over the competition. Thanks to CFA Society Malaysia and the Securities Industry Development Corporation (SIDC) for organizing a great and engaging event! #CFAInstituteResearchChallenge #ResearchCompetition #Mentorship #Resilience #Teamwork #ProudMentor #ArtificialIntelligence
